Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Three weeks passed, and the high-security observation wing of St. Jude Medical Center remained an impregnable fortress. Khloe’s condition had stabilized, though she remained under the continuous supervision of Dr. Jenkins. The continuous care and peace had allowed her body to heal, the severe bruising fading into a faint, silver scar—a permanent reminder of the day she stopped being a victim.

She sat up in her automated bed, a laptop resting on her lap as she reviewed the latest corporate filings for what was left of the Thorne Group.

Isabella Rossi’s bail had been denied three separate times due to her status as a flight risk. She was currently sitting in a state penitentiary cell, awaiting a trial that would almost certainly result in a fifteen-to-twenty-year sentence for attempted fetal homicide. The high-society socialite who used to spend thousands on custom silk gowns was now wearing a grey prison uniform, completely abandoned by her wealthy friends.

The door to Khloe's room opened quietly, and Arthur Pendelton walked in, holding a small silver tray with a cup of warm tea. Behind him came Marcus.

Marcus looked unrecognizable. He had lost at least fifteen pounds, his hair was unkempt, and the expensive designer suits had been replaced by a simple, worn jacket. He looked like a ghost haunting the corridors of his own destruction.

"Khloe," Marcus said, his voice a low, raspy whisper. He stopped at the foot of the bed, refusing to step any closer, as if an invisible wall separated them. "Thank you for allowing me up here."

"I didn't do it for you, Marcus," Khloe said calmly, shutting her laptop. "I did it because Alejandro needs your final signatures on the bankruptcy restructuring documents, and I preferred to see you sign them myself."

Marcus let out a slow, ragged breath, looking down at his hands. "The board voted to liquidate the remaining assets this morning. The Thorne Tower... your uncle's trust bought it for pennies on the dollar during the auction. I have nothing left, Khloe. No company, no reputation, no name. Even my personal apartment has been seized to pay off the outstanding employee pensions Donald embezzled."

"You have exactly what you gave me for eleven years, Marcus," Khloe said, her voice dropping into an icy register that cut through the quiet room. "For over a decade, I stood by your side. I designed the branding for your hotels. I organized your charity galas. I sat through endless dinners listening to your business partners talk down to me because I was 'just a quiet housewife.' And every time I asked you to help me, every time I told you that Isabella was threatening me in the shadows, you told me I was being dramatic. You told me I was nothing without your charity."

"I was blind, Khloe!" Marcus suddenly stepped forward, his eyes filling with tears as he looked at her swollen stomach. "I was so consumed by the wealth, by the press profiles, by the desire to beat my rivals... I thought I was protecting you by keeping you away from the corporate filth. I didn't see that the filth was already inside my own house. I am so sorry. If I could take that day back, if I could take that kick myself... I would do it a thousand times over."

Khloe looked at him for a long time. She saw the genuine grief in his eyes, the absolute destruction of his pride. But she also knew that some mirrors, once shattered, could never be pieced back together without the cracks cutting the hands that held them.

"I believe you are sorry, Marcus," Khloe said softly, her hand moving to rest on her belly as she felt a distinct, reassuring kick from her son. "But being sorry doesn't change the fact that when I was on that floor, bleeding and broken, your first instinct was to check the stock ticker. Your redemption cannot happen inside my life. It has to happen inside your own."

Alejandro Vargas stepped into the room, sliding a thick set of legal folders onto the table beside Marcus. "Sign page twelve and fourteen, Mr. Thorne. You are relinquishing all parental rights to the child, and you are transferring your remaining personal shares into a blind educational trust managed exclusively by the Pendelton estate. In exchange, the Pendelton Trust will drop the civil liability lawsuits against your personal estate, allowing you to avoid prison time for Donald's corporate fraud."

May you like

Marcus looked at the pen in his hand, his fingers trembling. He looked at Khloe one last time, realizing that this was the final moment he would ever spend in her presence as her husband.

With a heavy, broken sigh, he leaned over the table and signed his name, erasing himself from her future forever.
