Chapter 6: The Wife Who Lied

Chapter 6: The Wife Who Lied

The world went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

There is a difference.

Quiet means there is still peace somewhere.

Silence means everything inside you has stopped working.

I stared at the picture on Ethan’s phone.

Claire.

Standing outside the Whitmore Estate.

Talking to Patricia.

The same woman who had slapped my daughter.

The same woman who threatened to destroy me.

The same woman Claire claimed she was afraid of.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“She said she was leaving.”

My voice sounded strange.

Almost like it belonged to someone else.

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

The picture said everything.

Claire had lied.

Again.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

And the expression on her face told me before she spoke.

She knew.

She knew what we had seen.

“Please.”

Just one word.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

“You were there.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

The honesty hit harder than another lie.

I laughed quietly.

A broken laugh.

“You actually admitted it.”

“Daniel, listen—”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“You told me you were trapped.”

“I am.”

“You told me your mother controlled you.”

“She does.”

“Then why were you standing with her?”

Claire looked toward Lily.

And immediately lowered her voice.

“Not here.”

I stepped closer.

“Why?”

“Because Lily is listening.”

I looked at my daughter.

She was sitting on the couch.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

Watching us with frightened eyes.

And suddenly I realized something.

This was what the Whitmores did.

They didn’t just hurt people.

They made children feel unsafe.

I turned away.

“Ethan, take Lily upstairs.”

Claire’s face changed.

“Daniel—”

“Now.”

Ethan gently guided Lily away.

The second they disappeared, I faced Claire.

“Start talking.”

She wiped her tears.

“I went there because I needed answers.”

“From Patricia?”

“Yes.”

“You could have told me.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

She looked at me.

“Because if I told you, you would stop me.”

“Correct.”

“Because you don’t understand.”

I stepped forward.

“No, Claire. I understand perfectly.”

My voice lowered.

“You keep making choices for everyone.”

She flinched.

“You decided Lily needed to stay quiet at the gala.”

“You decided I shouldn’t know about your father.”

“You decided meeting Patricia behind my back was acceptable.”

A tear rolled down her face.

“I was trying to protect you.”

The sentence made me angry.

“Stop saying that.”

She froze.

“Stop using protection as an excuse for betrayal.”

Silence.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Claire whispered:

“She threatened Lily.”

My anger paused.

“What?”

“She told me if I didn’t come back, she would take Lily away.”

I stared at her.

“She already tried.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t understand what she meant.”

She sat down.

“My mother has people everywhere.”

“What people?”

“Lawyers. Judges. Police. Politicians.”

My stomach tightened.

“She thinks she can control the system.”

Claire nodded.

“She believes nobody can touch her.”

I looked at the window.

The snow outside covered everything.

Made the world look clean.

But nothing about this was clean.

“Then why meet her?”

Claire took a deep breath.

“Because she offered me a deal.”

I looked back.

“What deal?”

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“Lily.”

My entire body tensed.

“She said if I brought Lily back…”

Claire closed her eyes.

“She would stop fighting you.”

I stared at her.

“You were going to give her our daughter?”

“No!”

The answer came instantly.

Almost desperate.

“I was pretending.”

I didn’t speak.

“I went there to record her.”

She looked at me.

“I needed proof.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“Where is it?”

Claire hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Claire.”

Her face collapsed.

“She found out.”

A cold feeling spread through me.

“What happened?”

“She took my phone.”

“And?”

“She destroyed it.”

I shook my head.

“So you came back with nothing.”

“No.”

She reached into her coat.

My eyes narrowed.

She pulled out a small device.

A tiny recording chip.

“I hid this.”

I stared.

“What is it?”

“Everything.”

Ethan came downstairs.

“What happened?”

I looked at Claire.

“She has a recording.”

His expression changed.

“A recording of what?”

Claire handed him the chip.

“Patricia.”

Ethan immediately grabbed his laptop.

Five minutes later, the room was filled with static.

Then Patricia’s voice.

Cold.

Clear.

“Your husband is becoming a problem.”

Claire’s recorded voice answered.

“What are you going to do?”

A pause.

Then Patricia said:

“Whatever is necessary.”

My blood ran cold.

Claire’s voice shook in the recording.

“You cannot hurt Lily.”

A small laugh.

“I never said I would hurt her.”

Silence.

Then Patricia continued:

“I said I would remove obstacles.”

Ethan looked at me.

The recording continued.

Claire asked:

“Why are you doing this?”

Patricia answered:

“Because Richard is alive.”

A pause.

“And if Richard talks, everything collapses.”

My heart pounded.

Everything?

What everything?

Then Patricia said the words that changed the entire story.

“Daniel Parker has no idea who his father really was.”

I froze.

Ethan stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

My father.

Again.

Always my father.

“What does she mean?”

Claire looked terrified.

“I don’t know.”

But something in her eyes told me she did.

“Claire.”

She looked away.

That was the answer.

“You know.”

Her silence confirmed it.

“Tell me.”

She shook her head.

“Daniel, please.”

“Tell me!”

My voice echoed through the house.

Ethan looked upstairs.

Checking if Lily heard.

Then Claire whispered:

“Your father wasn’t just a businessman.”

I waited.

“He was involved with the Whitmores.”

I felt sick.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“For years.”

“And you never told me?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“From what?”

Claire looked at me.

“From becoming exactly what they wanted.”

My anger faded slightly.

“What does that mean?”

She took a shaky breath.

“Daniel…”

A pause.

“Your father wasn’t killed by accident.”

The room froze.

“What?”

Claire looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“He was investigating them.”

I stepped back.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“He found out what Patricia was doing.”

My heart was pounding.

“And then?”

Claire whispered:

“She made him disappear.”

I felt my knees weaken.

My father.

The man I believed died in an accident.

The man I spent my entire life missing.

Was murdered.

By the Whitmores.

That night, we didn’t sleep.

Nobody did.

We watched the recording again.

And again.

Until Ethan found something.

A hidden audio layer.

A second conversation.

Almost impossible to hear.

He increased the volume.

Static.

Then Patricia’s voice.

This time, she wasn’t talking to Claire.

She was talking to someone else.

A man.

The same man from the phone.

Richard.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Richard answered:

“And you should have gone to prison.”

Patricia laughed.

“You think Daniel can defeat me?”

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“He already has.”

Silence.

Then Patricia whispered:

“What did you do?”

Richard answered:

“I told him the truth.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Ethan received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

Meet me if you want to know who really betrayed you.

Attached.

A location.

An abandoned warehouse outside the city.

Claire looked at me.

“Don’t go.”

I stared at the address.

“Why?”

“Because it’s a trap.”

Maybe she was right.

Maybe it was.

But there was one thing I knew.

The truth was there.

And I had spent my whole life living inside a lie.

I grabbed my coat.

Claire stood.

“Daniel.”

I looked at her.

For the first time, I saw something different in her eyes.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Regret.

“I’m sorry.”

I paused.

She continued:

“For everything.”

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t ready.

Not yet.

I walked toward the door.

Then Lily appeared at the stairs.

“Daddy?”

I stopped.

She looked at me.

“Are you leaving too?”

That question destroyed me.

Because after everything…

After all the lies…

After all the betrayal…

My daughter was still afraid of being abandoned.

I walked back.

I knelt.

“I’m not leaving you.”

She hugged me.

“I promise?”

I closed my eyes.

“I promise.”

Then I looked at Claire.

And I made another promise.

Not to her.

Not to the Whitmores.

To myself.

May you like

I was going to uncover the truth.

No matter who it destroyed.
