Chapter 3: The Person Inside the House

Chapter 3: The Person Inside the House
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Claire.
Not Ethan.
The entire house seemed frozen.
Because there was only one question running through my mind.
Someone inside my house?
Someone I trusted?
Someone who had access to Lily?
My eyes moved slowly around the living room.
The windows.
The hallway.
The staircase.
Every shadow suddenly felt different.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
Claire looked like she was fighting herself.
Like she wanted to say something but was terrified of the consequences.
“I mean exactly what I said.”
She stepped closer.
“Daniel, you have to listen to me. My mother knows everything.”
Ethan moved between us slightly.
Not aggressively.
Protectively.
“Claire, start explaining.”
She looked at him.
“Who are you?”
“My lawyer.”
Her eyes widened.
“You already hired a lawyer?”
“Yes.”
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
“Of course you did.”
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Act like I’m the problem.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m not.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Silence.
Finally, Claire whispered:
“My mother has been controlling my life for years.”
I stared at her.
“That’s not possible.”
She laughed softly.
But there was no humor in it.
“You think you know my family?”
She wiped her tears.
“You know the version we show people.”
I didn’t answer.
Because deep down, I knew she was right.
The Whitmores were experts at appearances.
Perfect smiles.
Perfect parties.
Perfect photographs.
Everything beautiful.
Everything fake.
“My mother decides everything,” Claire continued. “Who I married. Who I spent time with. What people thought about me.”
I shook my head.
“Claire, you’re an adult.”
She looked at me.
“You still don’t understand.”
Her voice broke.
“When I was eighteen, I tried to leave.”
I frowned.
“Leave where?”
“Anywhere.”
She looked away.
“She found me.”
A chill went through me.
“What happened?”
“She told me if I embarrassed the family, she would ruin me.”
I waited.
But Claire didn’t continue.
“What did she do?”
Claire’s lips trembled.
“She made sure I lost everything.”
Ethan crossed his arms.
“How?”
Claire looked at him.
“My bank accounts disappeared.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“She controlled the family money. My education. My apartment.”
She swallowed.
“She told everyone I was unstable.”
The room became silent.
“She made people believe I was having a breakdown.”
I felt something heavy settle in my chest.
Because suddenly I remembered.
The first year I dated Claire.
The strange phone calls.
The way she apologized every time she disagreed with her mother.
The way she always asked:
“Do you think my mom is right?”
I thought it was insecurity.
I never realized it was fear.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Claire looked at me.
Because that answer hurt.
“Because she warned me.”
“About what?”
Her voice dropped.
“She said if I ever told anyone, she would take Lily away.”
I froze.
“She threatened you with our daughter?”
Claire nodded.
“For years.”
The room went quiet.
Ethan spoke carefully.
“Claire, why did you defend her last night?”
Claire closed her eyes.
And when she opened them, there was shame.
“She told me if I didn’t, she would make sure every person in that room believed you were dangerous.”
She looked at me.
“She said she would call the police before you left.”
My stomach tightened.
“She was trying to make me look like the aggressor.”
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice cracked.
“And I thought if I played along, I could protect Lily.”
I stared at her.
“By letting your mother hit her?”
The words landed hard.
Claire flinched.
“I know.”
She looked down.
“I know what it looked like.”
“It wasn’t just what it looked like.”
“I know.”
For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.
She just stood there.
Broken.
I wanted to forgive her.
I wanted to believe her.
But my daughter’s cheek was still red.
And that memory was louder than anything else.
Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His face changed.
“What?”
He didn’t answer.
“Ethan?”
He turned the screen toward me.
A news alert.
WHITMORE FAMILY RELEASES STATEMENT REGARDING CHRISTMAS INCIDENT
My blood went cold.
I opened it.
The statement was short.
Professional.
Perfectly written.
It said there had been a “family disagreement.”
It said Lily had been “temporarily removed by an emotionally unstable parent.”
Emotionally unstable.
Me.
The article included a quote from Patricia.
“Family situations should remain private, but unfortunately some people use children as weapons.”
I laughed.
A quiet, angry laugh.
“She’s accusing me of exactly what she’s doing.”
Ethan nodded.
“She’s controlling the story.”
Claire suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.”
Her face turned pale.
“What?”
She pointed at the article.
“Look.”
I looked closer.
The picture.
A photo of me leaving the gala.
Holding Lily.
Taken from outside.
Someone had captured it.
Not a guest.
Not a random person.
Someone who was waiting.
Someone who knew I would leave.
My blood turned cold.
“She planned this.”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire whispered:
“She always plans everything.”
Then the lights went out.
The entire house went dark.
Lily screamed upstairs.
“DADDY!”
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t breathe.
I just moved.
I reached her room.
She was sitting up in bed, crying.
“It’s okay.”
I grabbed her.
“I’m here.”
Her small arms wrapped around my neck.
Then I noticed something.
The window.
It was open.
Snow blew inside.
My heart stopped.
“Claire?”
No answer.
“Ethan?”
Nothing.
I grabbed my phone.
No signal.
Then Lily whispered something.
Something that made my blood freeze.
“Daddy…”
I looked down.
“What?”
She pointed toward the closet.
Her voice shook.
“There was someone in my room before you came.”
I felt every muscle in my body tense.
“What did they look like?”
Lily squeezed her eyes shut.
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
“But they knew my name.”
My hands tightened.
“What did they say?”
She started crying again.
“They said…”
She swallowed.
“They said Grandma wants you to come home.”
The hallway creaked.
I turned.
Slowly.
Someone was walking downstairs.
Heavy footsteps.
Not Ethan.
Not Claire.
Someone else.
I moved Lily behind me.
My phone was useless.
No signal.
No weapon.
Just me.
Protecting my daughter.
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Daniel.”
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The person walked into the moonlight.
And my heart dropped.
Because I knew him.
Everyone knew him.
He had been at the gala.
He had smiled at me.
He had shaken my hand.
He had told me:
“Beautiful daughter you have.”
It was Jonathan Reeves.
The Whitmore family lawyer.
Standing inside my house.
At midnight.
Without permission.
“How did you get in?”
He looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“I came to give you one last chance.”
My anger exploded.
“You broke into my home?”
He ignored me.
“Bring Lily back.”
I laughed.
“You’re insane.”
His face stayed emotionless.
Then he said:
“Daniel, you still don’t understand.”
A pause.
“Your fight isn’t with Patricia.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“It means Patricia is only following orders.”
The room went silent.
“Whose orders?”
He looked at me.
And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“Your wife’s father.”
I froze.
“Claire’s father is dead.”
Jonathan smiled slightly.
“No.”
My blood ran cold.
“He isn’t.”
Jonathan whispered:
“He has been alive this entire time.”
And then the power came back on.
But Jonathan was gone.
The front door was open.
And on the floor was a small white envelope.
With my name on it.
May you like
Inside was one sentence.
Ask Claire why she never told you about her father.
