Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Hastings

The VIP wing of St. Catherine’s was a fortress of luxury, completely cut off from the rest of the hospital. For three days, I rested under the care of the nation’s top toxicologists. The NeuroX-4 had been successfully flushed from my system, leaving no permanent damage, but the psychological shift within me was permanent. The naive, submissive Clara who tolerated her husband’s coldness was dead.

My uncle, Arthur Vance, sat across from me in a plush leather armchair, sipping black coffee. On the glass table between us lay thick folders detailing the financial webs of the Hastings family and Julian’s hidden accounts.

"They thought you were an orphan, Clara," Arthur said softly. "When your mother left the Vance family to marry your father, she wanted a simple life for you. But she made me promise that if you were ever in danger, I would step in. I should have checked on you sooner."

"It's okay, Uncle," I said, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city skyline. "If you had stepped in earlier, I wouldn't have seen their true colors. I needed to see how rotten they were to the core."

"The Hastings family is panicking," Arthur replied, a cold smile touching his lips. "Chloe’s father, Marcus Hastings, has been calling my office every five minutes. He’s offering fifty percent of his company’s shares to drop the criminal charges against his daughter. He doesn't care about Julian, of course. He wants Julian to take the full blame."

"And what about Julian?" I asked, my voice devoid of emotion.

"Julian is singing like a bird in custody," Arthur chuckled darkly. "To save his medical license and avoid jail time, he has turned over all his private messages with Chloe. He’s claiming she manipulated him, blackmailed him into giving her the keycard. He even confessed that they had been embezzling funds from the hospital’s logistics budget for the past year."

Just then, my personal assistant—provided by Arthur—entered the room. "Miss Clara, Chairman Vance. Marcus Hastings and Julian’s parents are downstairs in the private reception. They are begging for a five-minute meeting with you. Marcus brought his legal team."

I looked at my uncle. "Let them up. But let's change the setting. I want to meet them in the grand boardroom."

Ten minutes later, I walked into the Vance Foundation’s boardroom. I was no longer wearing the faded clothes of a neglected housewife. I wore a tailored, midnight-blue silk suit, my hair styled perfectly, diamonds catching the light. Arthur walked a step behind me, establishing that today, I was the one holding the gavel.

When we entered, Julian’s mother, Eleanor, immediately rushed forward. Her face was red from crying. "Clara! Oh, thank God! Look at you, you look beautiful! It’s all a misunderstanding, darling. Julian loves you! He was trapped by that wicked Hastings girl! You know how weak men can be when tempted, but his heart belongs to you!"

I bypassed her completely, taking my seat at the head of the massive mahogany table. Arthur sat to my right.

Marcus Hastings, a powerful-looking man with graying hair, looked at me with a mixture of resentment and desperation. "Miss Clara, let's skip the theatrics. My daughter made a foolish, emotional mistake. She’s young. But a criminal record will ruin her life. We are prepared to settle this out of court. Name your price. Ten million? Twenty million?"

I leaned back, crossing my legs. "Mr. Hastings, your daughter didn't make an emotional mistake. She committed a pre-meditated corporate crime and a physical assault using chemical agents inside a federal medical facility. Do you think the Vance family needs your ten million dollars?"

Marcus’s face darkened. "Don't be arrogant, young lady. The Hastings Group provides eighty percent of the medical supplies to this state. If you crush us, St. Catherine’s will suffer a massive supply chain crisis. The board of directors won't let you ruin the hospital's reputation over a domestic dispute."

"Is that so?" I signaled to my assistant.

The projector screen turned on, displaying a series of financial audits, shipping manifests, and customs documents.

"For the past forty-eight hours, the Vance legal and compliance teams have been auditing the Hastings Group’s supply chain," I stated coldly. "We discovered that for the last eighteen months, your company has been importing counterfeit, sub-standard surgical mesh and expired cardiac stents from unverified overseas suppliers, re-labeling them as premium goods, and charging St. Catherine's premium prices. Julian was your insider who approved the quality control checks."

Marcus’s jaw dropped. The lawyers behind him began whispering furiously, their faces draining of color.

"This isn't a domestic dispute anymore, Mr. Hastings," I said, leaning forward, my eyes locking onto his. "This is a massive, multi-million dollar medical fraud case that endangers thousands of lives. Effective immediately, the Vance Foundation has terminated all contracts with the Hastings Group. We have also filed a formal report with the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

"You... you’re destroying us!" Marcus gasped, slamming his hands on the table. "This will bankrupt my entire family! We will lose everything!"

"You should have thought about that before your daughter tried to paralyze me on a marble floor," I said, my voice cutting through his panic like a knife.

Eleanor, Julian’s mother, fell to her knees, grabbing the edge of the table. "Clara, please! What about Julian? He’s your husband! If he goes to prison, our family name is ruined! We will be beggars!"

"Julian ceased to be my husband the moment he stood by and watched me bleed," I replied, looking down at her with pity. "Security, escort these people out of the building. They are no longer permitted on any Vance property."

As they were dragged out, screaming and crying, Marcus Hastings looked at me with pure hatred. "This isn't over, Clara! You think you've won because of your uncle? I will drag your name through the mud! I will expose the secrets of the Vance family!"

I didn't answer. I just watched him leave. I knew this was just the first layer of the snake pit. But I was no longer afraid of the venom.
