Chapter 1 - The Rewind of Truth

The silence in the grand lobby of St. Catherine’s Medical Center was absolute. A moment ago, my husband, Julian, had been holding the hand of his mistress, Chloe, pretending to be a chivalrous savior while I lay humiliated on the cold marble floor. The onlookers had been whispering, judging me as a desperate, penniless woman trying to cling to a wealthy man.
Then, Chairman Arthur Vance—the billionaire owner of the entire medical foundation—had walked in and shattered their reality by calling me his niece.
But the true shift in the atmosphere didn’t happen until Director Rodriguez, the head of elite security, stepped forward holding a military-grade tablet synced to the hospital’s live, multi-angle CCTV network. He had a look of sheer terror on his face.
"Chairman Vance," Rodriguez stammered, his voice echoing in the dead silence. "You need to see this. We didn’t just capture the fall. We captured what happened three minutes before the fall."
Julian’s face went pale. Chloe, still trying to maintain her elegant posture despite the Chairman's presence, took a step back. "It was just an accident!" she cried out, her voice pitching too high. "She tripped over her own feet! She’s trying to frame us!"
"Be quiet," Chairman Arthur Vance commanded. The authority in his voice was like a physical weight pressing down on the room. He didn’t look at Chloe. He didn’t even look at Julian. He kept his arm firmly around my shoulders, supporting me, making sure everyone knew exactly who I was to him. "Play it, Rodriguez. On the main lobby displays."
With a swipe of the director’s finger, the massive, high-definition digital directory screens dominating the lobby flickered. The hospital ads disappeared, replaced by the crystal-clear security feed from the VIP lounge entrance.
On screen, I was walking out of the elevator, holding a folder containing my medical reports.
Suddenly, Chloe appeared from the side corridor. The footage had high-fidelity audio capture.
"Look at you," Chloe’s voice boomed through the lobby speakers, dripping with malice. "You think because you have a marriage certificate, you own him? Julian belongs to me now. He’s transferring the hospital’s logistics contract to my family’s company tomorrow. You’re just a ghost in his house."
The crowd gasped. Julian’s eyes widened in horror as his own voice emerged from the speakers next. On screen, he walked up, looking at me with pure disgust. "Sign the divorce papers, Clara. Don't make this ugly. You don't belong in our world anymore."
But that wasn’t the discovery that made everyone stop breathing.
The camera zoomed in automatically as Rodriguez adjusted the contrast. The footage showed Chloe stepping closer to me. As I tried to walk past her, Chloe didn't just push me. The zoom revealed her hand slipping a small, silver medical syringe back into her designer coat pocket immediately after I stumbled.
Before I hit the floor, my legs had given out abnormally.
"What is that?" Arthur’s voice dropped to a deadly, freezing register. "Director Rodriguez, analyze the frame."
"Sir, Miss Chloe is not a registered medical professional, but she was seen entering the restricted pharmaceutical storage ten minutes prior using Dr. Julian’s master keycard," Rodriguez reported, his voice trembling. "The syringe she used contains a rapid-acting paralytic agent—NeuroX-4. It causes temporary lower-limb collapse within sixty seconds. She didn't just push your niece, Chairman. She intentionally drugged her in a public space to simulate a clumsy fall and cause a permanent spinal injury."
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. The doctors and nurses in the lobby looked at Chloe as if she were a monster. Drugging someone inside St. Catherine’s Medical Center—the most prestigious hospital in the country—was a federal crime, an institutional sacrilege.
Julian turned slowly to Chloe, his face a mask of shock and betrayal. "Chloe... you told me she just fainted from shock! You said you didn't touch her!"
"Julian, no! They're fabricating it! It's an AI edit!" Chloe screamed, her elegant facade completely disintegrating. She reached out to grab his arm, but Julian violently pushed her away, terrified of being implicated in a criminal conspiracy in front of the Chairman.
"Don't touch me!" Julian shouted, trying to save his own skin. He immediately turned toward Arthur and fell to his knees on the very same marble floor where I had been lying moments ago. "Chairman Vance! Uncle Arthur! I swear to you, I knew nothing about this! I was blinded by her lies! Clara, please, tell your uncle! I love you, I’ve always loved you, I was just under pressure!"
I looked down at the man I had loved for five years. The man who had promised to protect me, who had just offered his hand to his mistress while treating me like trash. Seeing him on his knees didn't bring me joy; it only brought a cold, liberating clarity.
"Don't call him Uncle," I said, my voice steady, amplified by the absolute silence of the room. "And don't look at me. From this moment on, Julian, you are nothing to me."
Arthur looked at the security team. "Lock down the hospital. Call the federal authorities. Dr. Julian Vance and Miss Chloe Hastings are to be detained immediately for attempted grievous bodily harm, corporate espionage, and illegal possession of controlled substances."
"No! You can't do this! My father is the main supplier of this hospital!" Chloe shrieked as two burly security guards pinned her arms behind her back, forcing her designer bag to drop to the floor. The silver syringe rolled out across the marble, stopping right at Arthur’s feet.
Julian began to beg, tears streaming down his face as handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "Clara! Please! The logistics contract—our marriage—think of our families!"

"Take them away," Arthur ordered, not even giving them another glance. He turned to me, his stern face softening into deep worry. "Clara, my dear, let's get you to the private wing. We need to check the toxin levels in your system. I'm so sorry I arrived so late."
As I was lifted onto a pristine, white VIP gurney, I looked back at the chaotic scene. The crowd was filming everything on their phones. Tomorrow, the world would know that the discarded wife of Julian Vance was actually the crown jewel of the Vance empire. And this was only the first day of their reckoning.
