Chapter 6 - The Courtroom

The hearing was brutal. Linda sat across the room looking frail and remorseful. Her lawyer painted her as a concerned grandmother who made a terrible mistake. Natalie testified, downplaying everything.

I took the stand and told the truth without embellishment. The silence that morning. The clammy skin. The fear that I had lost my daughter in her own bed. The stuffed elephant still clutched in her hand.

The judge listened carefully. When Dr. Walsh testified about the medical dangers, even Linda’s lawyer looked uncomfortable.

The ruling came swiftly. Full temporary custody to me. Supervised visitation only after extensive parenting classes and psychological evaluation for Linda. Natalie was barred entirely.

Outside the courthouse, Linda approached me. “I’m sorry, Evan. I love her.”

“I know you think you do,” I said. “But love doesn’t drug a child because she’s inconvenient. Prove you’ve changed. Until then, stay away.”
