Chapter 11 - A Safe Harbor
Two years later, I stood in our backyard watching Clara chase butterflies with her little sister, Emma. Sarah held my hand, her wedding ring catching the sunlight. The stuffed elephant now sat proudly on Clara’s shelf, a survivor’s trophy.
Linda visited monthly. She had changed. Natalie remained distant, but that was her choice.
I had learned the hardest lesson of my career not in the ER, but in my own home: protection sometimes means letting go. Love sometimes means boundaries.
Clara ran to me, breathless and laughing. “Daddy, look! I caught one!”
I scooped her up. “You caught my heart a long time ago, sweetheart.”
As the sun set over our family, I felt complete. The silence that had once terrified me was now filled with joy, laughter, and the steady breathing of children who knew they were safe.
