Months later, Daniel found Emily at a charity event.
She looked different.
Confident.
Peaceful.
Happy.
Not because she had found someone else.
Because she had found herself.
Daniel approached slowly.
“Emily.”
She turned.
There was no anger in her eyes anymore.
Only distance.
“I owe you an apology.”
Emily said nothing.
“I was cruel.”
“Yes.”
“I hurt you.”
“Yes.”
“I lost everything because of my choices.”
Emily looked at him.
“That is the first honest thing you’ve said.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I wish I could change what happened.”
Emily smiled sadly.
“So do I.”
A long silence followed.
“But some things cannot be repaired.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Do you hate me?”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
That answer surprised him.
“I don’t hate you.”
She paused.
“I just don’t belong to you anymore.”
