Chapter 2: The Woman They Underestimated

Chapter 2: The Woman They Underestimated

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one spoke.

No one dared to breathe too loudly.

Because everyone understood one thing.

Something much bigger than a ruined wedding had just happened.

Daniel stared at Arthur’s phone in disbelief.

“What did you just say?”

Arthur calmly placed the phone back into his pocket.

“Miss Emily requested that I inform Mr. William Carter that the agreement is canceled.”

Daniel’s expression changed instantly.

The arrogance disappeared.

Because everyone in that room knew the name William Carter.

Emily’s father.

The billionaire behind Carter International.

The man whose company had saved Daniel’s family business from bankruptcy three years earlier.

Daniel had not married Emily because he loved her.

He married her because her family’s influence could rebuild his father’s failing empire.

And Emily had known it.

She had known everything.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily, don’t be dramatic.”

For the first time that night, she looked at him.

Not with love.

Not with sadness.

With disappointment.

“You still think this is about the wedding?”

Her voice was quiet.

“That’s your mistake, Daniel.”

Vanessa stood up from the bridal chair.

“This is ridiculous. She’s just angry.”

Emily looked at her.

A small, painful smile appeared.

“No, Vanessa.”

She adjusted the torn sleeve of her wedding dress.

“I was angry when I discovered your affair.”

The room became silent.

“I was angry when I found the messages between you and Daniel.”

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“I was angry when I realized his family knew and helped hide it.”

Daniel’s mother suddenly looked away.

“But tonight?”

Emily looked around the ballroom.

“At this moment, I’m not angry.”

She took a slow breath.

“I’m finished.”

The words were simple.

But they destroyed Daniel more than any accusation could.

Because Emily was no longer fighting for his love.

She was walking away from needing it.

Daniel laughed nervously.

“You think your father will destroy us because of a misunderstanding?”

Emily turned toward Arthur.

The elderly butler pressed a button on his phone.

A voice filled the ballroom.

William Carter.

“Arthur, put me on speaker.”

Everyone froze.

Emily’s father had been listening.

“I gave Daniel one chance,” William said.

“One chance to prove he respected my daughter.”

A pause.

“He failed.”

Daniel’s lips parted.

“Mr. Carter, I can explain—”

“No.”

William’s voice was cold.

“You cannot explain cruelty.”

The ballroom went completely silent.

“By morning, every contract between Carter International and the Reynolds family will be terminated.”

Daniel’s face lost all color.

His mother finally stepped forward.

“You wouldn’t do this over one mistake.”

Emily looked at her.

“One mistake?”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“You watched your son destroy my dignity in front of hundreds of people.”

She looked toward Daniel.

“And you still call it a mistake.”

No one answered.

Because there was nothing left to defend.

Emily turned around and walked away.

Barefoot.

With a torn wedding dress.

But with more power than anyone in that room.

And behind her, Daniel finally realized the truth.

He had thrown away the woman who could have saved him.
