Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of Nora

The room was so still you could hear the soft whirring of the air conditioning.
Julian stood at the base of the stage, his hands shaking violently at his sides, surrounded by federal marshals who were ensuring he didn't run. Nora was backed against a velvet pillar, her eyes darting toward the exit doors, realizing that the glamorous life she had stolen was evaporating before her eyes.
"Three years ago," I spoke into the microphone, my tone measured and powerful, "Julian Vance told the world that he was a genius who had revolutionized regenerative medicine. He invited investors from around the globe to throw billions into his company."
I clicked a remote control in my hand.
The massive high-definition presentation screen behind the stage—which was supposed to show Julian’s promotional video—instantly flickered to life.
Instead of promotional slides, the screen displayed a real-time bank ledger detailing a massive spiderweb of illegal transactions.
"What Julian failed to mention," I said, as the numbers scrolled automatically, "was that Vance Medical was operating as a massive Ponzi scheme. The research funds provided by Valencian Global were never used for clinical trials. They were transferred directly into Nouveau Elegance, a fake cosmetics brand owned entirely by Ms. Nora Lin."
Nora shrieked in terror. "That’s a lie! I’m an independent business owner! Julian gave me that money as a personal gift!"
"A gift of eighty-four million dollars stolen from public research grants?" I asked, looking down at her from the stage. "Including twelve million dollars stolen from the National Science Foundation?"
The SEC agent beside Marcus stepped forward, pulling a blue document from his folder. "Nora Lin, you are under federal investigation for wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny. Your assets have been frozen, and your passport has been flagged."
"Julian!" Nora screamed, rushing over and grabbing Julian’s tuxedo jacket, pulling on him frantically. "Do something! You said you had this controlled! You said she was an idiot who would take whatever crumbs you gave her! Fix this!"
Julian roughly shoved her away from him, throwing her onto the marble floor. "Get off me, you useless parasite! I paid for your life! I bought you your house, your clothes, your jewels! If I'm going down, I'm not taking the fall for your greed!"
"You paid for her life with my blood, Julian," I said sharply from the stage.
The screen shifted again.
This time, it wasn't financial records. It was a clear, high-definition video taken from inside the Zurich facility’s private office.
The video showed Julian and Nora sitting together at a desk, drinking scotch, while looking over my forced signature pages. On the audio track, Julian’s voice rang out crisp and terrifyingly clear:
“Once she signs the final patent transfer next month, we increase her dosage. The doctors will sign off on a heart failure diagnosis. No one questions a sick woman dying in her sleep.”
A terrifying roar of outrage erupted from the crowd of five hundred elite guests. Henri Valencian stepped back from Julian as if he were staring at a monster, his face pale with horror.
Nora, still sitting on the cold marble floor, buried her face in her hands and began to sob uncontrollably.

"Julian Vance," the lead Federal Marshal said, stepping up behind him and grabbing his wrists. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, human trafficking, corporate fraud, and grand larceny."
The heavy metal handcuffs clicked tightly around Julian’s wrists. The click echoed across the quiet, stunning ballroom like the final strike of a hammer.
