Chapter 2 - The Trap at the Gala

Within three hours of the courtroom explosion, the legal landscape had shifted like a seismic fault line.
Julian had managed to avoid immediate arrest by posting a temporary three-million-dollar emergency bond posted by his wealthy venture capitalist backers, but his world was burning down around him. Judge Reyes had issued a total freeze on all corporate and personal bank accounts tied to Julian Vance, Vance Medical Technologies, and Nora’s holding firm, Nouveau Elegance.
However, Julian was not a man who went down without a fight. He still possessed one weapon: the international Investors' Gala scheduled for that very evening at the Grand St. Regis Ballroom.
The gala was meant to be the public unveiling of Vance Medical’s new ten-billion-dollar partnership with Valencian Global, a massive European pharmaceutical conglomerate. If Julian could secure the signing of the contract on stage tonight, the foreign capital would flow into a Swiss escrow account beyond the immediate reach of the domestic asset freeze.
Sitting in Marcus Hale’s high-rise law office overlooking the city, I watched the evening news.
"Julian is desperate, Iris," Marcus said, placing a steaming cup of herbal tea in front of me. "His European investors don't know about the courtroom disaster yet. Sterling signed a strict gag order, and Julian's PR team is floating a story that your courtroom appearance was a staged stunt by a rival company."
"He thinks he can sign the Valencian deal tonight and flee the country before the federal indictments are formally unsealed tomorrow morning," I said, tracing the edge of my teacup.
"Exactly," Marcus agreed. "Which is why we aren't going to stop him from attending the gala."
I looked up at Marcus, a cold, calculated smile touching my lips. "We aren't stopping him. We're hosting it."
At 8:00 PM, the St. Regis Ballroom was a sea of black ties, silk evening gowns, and flashing paparazzi bulbs. Julian arrived looking surprisingly sleek, dressed in a custom Tom Ford tuxedo, though his sunken eyes and twitching jaw betrayed his internal panic. Nora accompanied him, wearing a bright red velvet dress, desperately trying to project an air of unbothered luxury despite her frozen bank cards.
Julian pushed through the crowd, shaking hands with foreign dignitaries and wealthy shareholders.
"Ah, Julian!" loud, booming voice called out. It was Henri Valencian, the CEO of Valencian Global. "An extraordinary turnout tonight! We are all eager for the formal signing at nine o'clock."
"Thank you, Henri," Julian said smoothly, accepting a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. "Tonight marks the beginning of a new era. Vance Medical is ready to heal the world."
"And what of your wife?" Henri asked casually, glancing around. "I read some absurd rumors online this afternoon about legal trouble..."
Julian chuckled softly, waving his hand in dismissal. "Poor Iris suffers from a tragic neurological condition, Henri. Early-onset paranoia. She has good days and bad days. My legal team is handling her care. Tonight is about the future."
"Is it?" a calm, clear voice echoed from the grand staircase.
The chatter in the ballroom died down instantly.
Every head turned toward the sweeping marble stairs.
I stood at the top of the landing. I wasn't wearing the plain gray coat from the courtroom. I was wearing a breathtaking, sleeveless gown of deep navy silk—bold, elegant, and completely open at the back and arms.
I wore my scars like armor. The pale marks against my smooth skin looked like constellations of survival. Beside me stood two senior agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Managing Director of the International Patent Bureau.
Julian dropped his champagne glass. It shattered on the marble floor with a sharp crash.
"What is she doing here?!" Nora shrieked under her breath, grabbing Julian’s arm. "Call security! Have her thrown out!"
I walked down the stairs slowly, gracefully, every eye in the room pinned to me. Henri Valencian looked at me in absolute shock, then looked at Julian.
"Dr. Iris Thorne?" Henri gasped. "The real creator of the Aegis protocol?"
"Good evening, Monsieur Valencian," I said, reaching the bottom of the stairs and extending my hand to him. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you in person. For three years, Julian has blocked my emails and intercepted my communications to your board."
"This is insane!" Julian screamed, stepping forward, his face red and contorted with rage. "Security! Remove this woman! She is trespassing! She is mentally unfit!"
Four heavy-set security guards moved toward me, but before they could lay a finger on my dress, Marcus Hale stepped forward accompanied by four federal marshals in dark suits.
"Stand down," the lead marshal commanded, flashing his badge. "This property, the event permits, and the underlying assets of Vance Medical Technologies are currently under the legal administration of Dr. Iris Thorne by court order issued at 4:30 PM today."
I walked past Julian, stepping up onto the main stage where the velvet-covered table held the ten-billion-dollar contract papers.

I took the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice carrying flawlessly through the crystal chandeliers of the ballroom. "Welcome to the final shareholder meeting of Vance Medical Technologies."
