Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail of Greed

By three o'clock that afternoon, the house was entirely mine again.

The police had driven Ryan away to the central precinct. Victoria had been forced to leave the property in a hailing taxi after the officers informed her that remaining on the land would constitute criminal trespassing. She had tried to load three heavy suitcases full of Ryan's suits into the cab, but the driver had refused to wait while she dragged them across the lawn.

Inside the quiet study, Eleanor set down a massive leather-bound ledger.

"Your father was a genius, Ava," Eleanor said, pouring herself a glass of water. "When he established the prenuptial agreement and the family trust structure before his death, he included a hidden clause. He knew Ryan’s family background."

"He never trusted Ryan," I murmured, sitting behind my father's old oak desk. "He told me once that a man who talks too much about his ambitions usually intends to build them with someone else's tools."

"And your father was right," Eleanor continued, opening the ledger. "For the past two years, Victoria’s shell company, Apex Holdings, has been siphoning money out of Vance Capital through fake invoicing for 'management consulting services.' But Ryan didn't just give her money. He took out personal loans against Vance Capital’s stock—stock that belonged to your trust."

She handed me a sheet of paper with a long list of figures highlighted in yellow.

"How much?" I asked.

"Roughly four million dollars," Eleanor replied. "They were planning to use that money to purchase a commercial property in Switzerland under Victoria's name. They were preparing to move the funds completely out of U.S. jurisdiction by the end of this month."

I looked at the dates. "That’s why he was so desperate to move her into the house today. He wanted her here so they could finalize the wiring process together using the high-speed secure network in your study."

"Exactly," Eleanor agreed. "If you had let her move into the downstairs suite, she would have had physical access to your father’s safe and the encrypted hard drives containing the master trust keys. They weren't just trying to bully you, Ava. They were executing a systematic takeover of your entire estate."

A soft tap sounded at the doorway. Marcus, my father’s longtime head of security who had retired two years ago, stepped into the room. I had called him at sunrise.

"Miss Ava," Marcus said, bowing his head respectfully. "The technical team has swept the entire property. We found four hidden listening devices—one in your bedroom, one in this study, and two in the living room."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. "He was recording me?"

"He was monitoring your conversations with your financial managers," Marcus clarified. "That’s how he knew when the quarterly dividends were released. I’ve disabled all of them and installed an encrypted security matrix. No one enters this property without biometric verification now."

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, feeling a deep wave of relief. "What about Victoria?"

Marcus smiled grimly. "She tried to check into the Grand Hyatt downtown, but her corporate credit cards were declined due to the freeze. Last I checked, she was sitting on her luggage outside a two-star motel near the highway, trying to reach her criminal defense lawyer."

I looked at my reflection in the dark glass of the desk lamp. The bruise on my eye was turning a deeper shade of blue, a stark physical reminder of the violent night before. But for the first time in three years, I didn't feel like a victim.

"Eleanor," I said, turning to my lawyer. "I want the full forensic audit handed over to the FBI's financial crimes division tomorrow morning. No deals. No settlements."

"And Ryan’s bail hearing?" Eleanor asked.

"Request the maximum," I said firmly. "He is a flight risk, he is dangerous, and he belongs behind bars."
