Chapter 2 - The House of Cards Collapses

The silence that settled over the driveway was absolute.
Victoria held the phone to her ear, but her hand was trembling so violently that the device rattled against her pearl earring.
"Mother?" Ryan asked, his confident posture breaking as he turned to her. "What are you talking about? Who frozen what?"
"The bank..." Victoria whispered, her eyes wide with unadulterated panic. "The corporate account... Apex Holdings. The auditor from the Treasury Department... they just served a freezing order on all assets. They said... they said there’s an ongoing fraud investigation."
Ryan turned back to me, his chest heaving with mounting rage and panic. "What did you do, Ava?! WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
He made a sudden sprint toward the terrace stairs, but Officer Torres and his partner moved with practiced efficiency. Within seconds, Ryan was slammed against the hood of his own car, his hands forced behind his back, metal handcuffs clicking loudly around his wrists.
"Get your hands off me!" Ryan screamed, thrashing against the officers. "Do you know who I am?! I am the Managing Director of Vance Capital!"
"Vance Capital was dissolved at 9:00 AM today, Ryan," Eleanor said calmly, stepping to the edge of the stairs with her tablet in hand. "Since Vance Capital was funded entirely through capital injections from the Sterling Family Trust—which Ava controls exclusively—the board executed an emergency clause to liquidate the firm due to breach of fiduciary duty and criminal misconduct."
"You can't do that!" Ryan yelled, his forehead pressed against the hot black paint of the Mercedes. "That company is mine! I built it!"
"You built it with my money," I said, walking down the terrace steps slowly until I stood just a few feet away from him. "You built it while paying your mother a sixty-thousand-dollar monthly 'consulting fee' through a shell company registered in Nevada. Did you really think I didn't see the transfer statements, Ryan? Did you really think I was too stupid to understand accounting?"
"You never cared about business!" Ryan spat, tears of frustration finally brimming in his eyes. "You sat at home reading books and painting! You were a terrified little girl when your father died!"
"I was grieving," I corrected softly, looking down at his restrained form. "There is a difference. Grief makes a person quiet. It doesn't make them blind."
Victoria rushed forward, grabbing the officer’s sleeve. "Un-hand my son! This is a domestic dispute! She’s doing this out of jealousy! She's bitter because Ryan wanted me to move in to take care of her!"
"Ma'am, step back immediately or you will be arrested for obstruction," Officer Torres warned sternly.
Victoria shrank back, her eyes darting from the officers to the mountains of clothes scattered across the green grass. The neighbors from across the lake were already standing on their dock, watching the scene through binoculars. A news helicopter, likely alerted by the sudden police activity at the famous Sterling estate, was hovering low in the blue sky.
"Ava, please," Ryan choked out, his arrogance crumbling into desperate bargaining as he felt the cold reality of the metal binding his wrists. "Think about what you're doing. We can talk about this. I was stressed last night. Work was overwhelming. I lost my temper... I’m sorry! I’ll go to counseling! I’ll do whatever you want!"
"You told me this morning that everyone would finally see how unstable I am," I said, pulling my phone from my pocket. "Do you remember saying that?"
I tapped the screen. The speaker amplified his voice clear as a bell, playing the recording from earlier that morning:
“Then everyone will finally see how unstable you really are,” Ryan’s recorded voice purred sinisterly. “Poor little Ava. Always emotional. Always crying. Always creating drama.”
Then came the sound of his cruel laughter, followed by the soft clatter of the makeup bag hitting the counter, and his sharp command: “Cover those bruises and try to smile.”
The police officers’ expressions hardened instantly.
"Is that your voice, Mr. Vance?" Officer Torres asked coldly.
Ryan remained silent, his cheek pressed flat against the car hood, breathing heavily.
"We also have the audio and video from the hallway cameras from 11:30 PM last night," Eleanor added, showing her tablet screen to the officers. "Showing Mr. Vance physically striking Mrs. Vance, dragging her across the floor, and threatening her life if she refused to sign over the deed to the downstairs wing."
"That's enough," Officer Torres said. "Ryan Vance, you are under arrest for felony domestic battery, assault, and extortion. You have the right to remain silent..."
As they hoisted Ryan into the back of the police cruiser, Victoria let out a dramatic shriek and sank to her knees among her son’s designer shirts. "You monster!" she screamed at me, her face contorted in hatred. "You ruined my family! You ruined my boy!"

I looked at her, feeling a strange sense of weightlessness. The fear that had gripped my chest for three years was gone, replaced by a cold, unwavering clarity.
"No, Victoria," I said, turning my back on her as I walked up the steps toward my home. "You and your son ruined yourselves. I just stopped paying for the illusion."
