Chapter 6 - The Foundation Restored

"You..." Todd’s voice shook, a terrifying mix of heartbreak and absolute fury. He stepped away from Brenda as if she were radioactive. "You never loved me. You never cared about Toby. You wanted the land."

"Todd, honey, it’s a fabrication! It’s AI! She faked it!" Brenda cried out, her voice desperate, her tears flowing freely now—but this time, they were tears of genuine terror.

"It’s not faked, Mrs. Sterling," Arthur Pendelton said, handing a second folder to Todd. "These are certified bank records showing you have been funneling money from Todd’s joint savings account into an offshore account registered to a Mr. Gregory Vance—your actual romantic partner. Furthermore, Dr. Marcus here has just confirmed that the mounting bracket in the nursery showed signs of deliberate lubrication—someone greased the threads to ensure the fixture would slip under weight."

Todd turned to Brenda, his face pale. "You greased it? You risked Toby’s life?"

"No! I didn't know it would fall when he was in there!" Brenda yelled, completely trapping herself in her own admission.

The police officer stepped forward, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "Brenda Sterling, you are under arrest for attempted grand larceny, conspiracy to commit fraud, and reckless endangerment of a child."

As the handcuffs clicked into place, Brenda lost all civility. She screamed, cursed, and thrashed as the officers dragged her out of the front door, right past Mrs. Gable, who was standing on her porch, her jaw on the floor. This time, the entire neighborhood watched as Brenda was stuffed into the back of a police cruiser.

The front door closed, leaving the house in a sudden, profound silence.

Todd collapsed into a chair, burying his face in his hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The weight of his own stupidity, his arrogance, and his betrayal of his mother crushed him.

I walked over to him. My bones still ached, but my heart felt lighter than it had in years. I placed a gentle hand on his trembling shoulder.

"Mom..." Todd choked out, looking up at me with eyes full of shame. "I’m so sorry. I didn't listen. I almost let her ruin everything. I almost let her hurt Toby. I don't deserve your forgiveness."

"You are my son, Todd," I said softly, pulling him into a hug. "You were blinded by love, and she was a professional predator. Your father and I built this house to be strong. The bones of this house can withstand a storm, Todd. But you have to be willing to rebuild."

Six Months LaterThe air in Cedar Ridge was crisp and beautiful as autumn arrived. The old colonial home practically glowed in the afternoon sun.

The neighborhood association page had a very different tone these days. Mrs. Gable had publicly apologized to me with a massive basket of hydrangeas, and the community had rallied around our family. Brenda’s trial was underway, and she was facing a lengthy prison sentence, with no access to a dime of the Vance estate.

Todd’s divorce had been finalized quickly, with him gaining full custody of Toby. He had thrown himself into therapy and into being the father Toby deserved.

I sat on the front porch swing, a warm cup of black coffee in my hands.

From inside the house, I could hear the sound of joyous laughter. Todd was in the newly renovated nursery, playing with Toby. The ceiling had been completely repaired, reinforced with heavy steel beams, and a simple, safe, and beautiful flush-mount light fixture now illuminated the room.

Todd walked out onto the porch, holding Toby, who was giggling and reaching his chubby little hands toward the autumn leaves falling from the oak trees. Todd sat down on the swing next to me, leaning his head against my shoulder.

"Thank you, Mom," he whispered. "For saving him. For saving me."

I looked at my grandson, his beautiful, clear eyes full of life and safety, and then at my son, who had finally found his way back home.

"We are Vances, Todd," I said, a peaceful smile spreading across my face as the swing rocked gently in the breeze. "We build things to last."
