Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The morning of the intake assessment was gray and rainy. The perfect weather for a funeral—or an execution.
At 7:45 AM, Brenda was in the kitchen, sipping an expensive latte, looking radiant. She was wearing a designer coat, ready to escort me to the asylum. Todd sat at the table, looking like a man marching to the gallows.
"Is she ready?" Brenda asked Todd, not bothering to lower her voice. "The Uber will be here soon. We need to make sure she doesn't make a scene in the driveway. I don't want Mrs. Gable seeing her throw a tantrum."
"She’s ready, Brenda," Todd muttered, his head in his hands.
Right on cue, the front doorbell rang.
"Oh, that must be the car," Brenda purred, smoothing down her skirt. She walked over to the front door and pulled it open, a fake, sympathetic smile plastered on her face.
The smile vanished instantly.
Standing on the porch wasn't an Uber driver. It was Arthur Pendelton, dressed in a sharp three-piece suit, flanked by two uniformed Cedar Ridge police officers and a middle-aged man carrying a heavy tool case. Behind them, parked along the curb, were three luxury sedans.
"Can... can I help you?" Brenda stammered, stepping back.
"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said coldly, stepping right past her into the foyer. "I am Arthur Pendelton, legal counsel for the estate of Harold Vance. And we are here to execute a structural and legal audit of this property."
Todd bolted up from the kitchen table, his eyes wide. "Arthur? What are you doing here? What’s going on?"
I walked out of my bedroom, fully dressed in my best Sunday dress, holding my iPad and a thick stack of printed documents. I didn't look like a battered, bruised old woman anymore. I looked like the matriarch of the Vance family.
"I called them, Todd," I said smoothly, stepping into the living room.
"Mom? What is this?" Todd asked, looking frantically between me, the police, and his wife.
"Martha, have you completely lost it?!" Brenda shrieked, her mask slipping, her voice echoing through the house. "You called the police? To your own home? Todd, look at this! She’s dangerous! She’s having a psychotic break!"
"Silence, Mrs. Sterling," Arthur said, his voice cutting through her screech like a razor.
Brenda froze at the sound of her real maiden name. The color instantly drained from her face.
"Officers," Arthur continued, gesturing to the man with the tool case. "This is Dr. Marcus Vance—no relation—a licensed forensic structural engineer. He is here to examine the nursery ceiling. And these are the legal titles to the home."
"Todd!" Brenda panicked, grabbing her husband's arm. "They’re trying to take the house! Do something! Kick them out!"
"He can't," I said, stepping forward. I handed Todd the printed documents. "Because this house doesn't belong to you, Todd. And it doesn't belong to me anymore either. It belongs to an irrevocable family trust, of which I am the sole trustee. And according to your father’s will, which was locked in a hidden safe you didn't bother to look for, any attempt to legally declare me incompetent without a panel of three independent, court-appointed doctors automatically triggers a full asset freeze and immediate eviction of any residents living on the property."
Todd stared at the papers, his jaw dropping. "Mom... Dad did this?"
"No, Todd. Your wife did this," I said, turning my gaze to Brenda, whose eyes were darting around the room like a trapped animal. "Or should I call you Brenda Sterling? The woman who cleaned out two elderly husbands in Illinois and Ohio before finding my son?"
Todd looked up, bewildered. "What? Brenda, what is she talking about?"
"She’s lying! She’s a crazy old witch making things up!" Brenda screamed, lunging toward me to grab the iPad out of my hands.
Before she could touch me, one of the police officers stepped in, firmly grabbing her arm and pushing her back. "Ma'am, step back immediately."
"Todd, look at the screen," I said, pressing play on the iPad.

Brenda’s own voice filled the living room. “...push the old lady into an asylum, and sell the land to the commercial developers. The property alone is worth two million. Just be patient.”
Todd listened. He listened to his wife plot the destruction of his mother, the sale of his childhood home, and the utter manipulation of his entire life. He looked at Brenda, and for the first time, the blindfold was ripped off. He saw the monster standing in front of him.
