Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Six months later, Vance Strategic Solutions had grown into one of the most successful independent consulting firms in the city. The story of my high-profile estate trial and corporate rise had made waves in the business community, earning me a spot on the city’s "Top 40 Under 40" executive list.
My personal life had settled into a beautiful, serene rhythm. The house was finally complete, filled with light, laughter, and frequent dinners with Rachel and my core team. For the first time in my adult life, I felt entirely whole, entirely independent, and completely in control of my own destiny.
Then came the annual City Economic Gala at the Grand Regency Ballroom—the biggest corporate event of the year.
I arrived in a floor-length, emerald-green silk gown, my hair styled in elegant waves. Alongside me walked Jerome Carter, who had not only become my trusted legal advisor but a dear friend.
As we mingled with city officials, investors, and fellow CEOs, I noticed a subtle shift in the room's energy. A tall, striking man in a flawlessly tailored navy tuxedo was standing near the grand staircase, surrounded by a group of prominent venture capitalists. He had dark, sharp eyes, a strong jawlines, and an air of quiet, effortless authority.
"Who is that?" I asked Jerome casually, taking a sip of sparkling water.
Jerome followed my gaze and smiled. "That, my dear Avery, is Ethan Vance."
I froze, turning to look at Jerome in shock. "Vance? As in..."
"As in Evelyn Vance’s estranged grand-nephew," Jerome confirmed in a low voice. "Ethan is the founder of Vance Global Technology. He spent the last decade in London building an international software empire. He came back to the States three months ago to expand his headquarters here."
My heart did a strange, unexpected flutter. "I didn't know Evelyn had other family."
"Ethan's father had a massive fallout with Scott’s branch of the family twenty years ago over Scott’s father’s financial corruption," Jerome explained. "Ethan refused to touch a single penny of the family trust. He built his entire fortune—over a hundred million—completely from scratch. He’s brilliant, fiercely ethical, and completely cut off Scott's side of the family years ago."
At that moment, as if sensing our conversation, Ethan turned his head. His dark eyes met mine across the crowded ballroom.
Instead of looking away, he held my gaze. A faint, genuine smile touched his lips. He excused himself from the circle of executives and walked straight toward us.
"Jerome," Ethan spoke, his voice deep, smooth, and warm, shaking Jerome's hand firmly.
"Ethan. Good to see you back in the city," Jerome smiled. "Allow me to introduce Avery Collins, CEO of Vance Strategic Solutions."
Ethan turned to me, taking my hand in his. Instead of a quick corporate handshake, he lifted my fingers slightly, giving a polite, respectful bow. His eyes held a warmth that instantly put me at ease.
"It is an honor to finally meet you, Avery," Ethan said softly. "I’ve been following your corporate expansion over the past few months. What you’ve achieved with Vance Strategic in such a short time is nothing short of extraordinary."
"Thank you, Mr. Vance," I smiled, feeling a soft blush touch my cheeks. "Though I must admit, sharing a last name with your family's trust has made for an interesting few months."
Ethan chuckled, a rich, genuine sound. "Please, call me Ethan. And as for my late grand-aunt’s trust... I read the court proceedings. What Scott tried to do to you was disgusting. My late Aunt Evelyn was a smart woman—she knew Scott was a snake. I’m glad her legacy ended up in the hands of someone who actually has grace, intelligence, and dignity."
We spent the rest of the evening talking.
Unlike Scott, who only ever talked about himself, his cars, and his status, Ethan was a captivating listener. He was genuinely interested in my analytical strategies, my vision for my company, and my passion for restoring historical homes. We shared the same sharp humor, the same work ethic, and a deep mutual respect for hard-earned success.
By the end of the night, as the gala was winding down, Ethan walked me out to my valet-parked car.
"Avery," he said, stopping under the warm glow of the hotel canopy lights. "I know you’ve been through a storm over the past year. The last thing I want to do is rush you or make you uncomfortable. But I would love the opportunity to take you out to dinner. No business talk. Just you and me."
I looked up into his clear, honest eyes. For the first time in nine years, I didn't feel fear, guardness, or suspicion. I felt a spark of genuine excitement.
"I would like that very much, Ethan," I smiled.
As my car pulled away, I caught a glimpse of the sidewalk across the street. Standing near a bus stop, wearing a stained uniform jacket and holding a trash bag, was Scott. He was working the night shift for a city cleanup crew.

He looked across the street and saw me in the back of the luxury car. He saw Ethan waving goodbye to me with warmth and affection. Scott took a step forward, his mouth open in utter shock, realizing that not only had he lost his grandmother's wealth to me—he was now watching me step into a life with the finest man his family had ever produced.
I didn't look back. I looked forward, into the bright, beautiful horizon of my new life.
