Chapter 2 - The Courtroom Confrontation

The county courthouse was a solemn structure of grey stone and polished marble, standing stark against the pale overcast sky. I arrived early, dressed in a tailored navy-blue suit, my hair pinned back into a sleek, professional chignon. Alongside me walked Jerome Carter, carrying two heavy leather briefcases stuffed with financial records, receipts, and certified copies of Evelyn Vance's living trust.

Rachel met us at the entrance, squeezing my hand tightly. "You look like a queen going to claim her kingdom," she whispered fiercely. "Do not let him see you sweat."

"I'm not sweating, Rachel," I said, feeling an eerie, calm focus settling over me. "I've never felt clearer in my entire life."

At 9:45 AM, Scott strutted through the glass doors of the courthouse, looking every bit the arrogant heir he believed himself to be. He was wearing an absurdly expensive tailored suit, a shiny Gold Rolex on his wrist, and sunglasses pushed up onto his hair despite being indoors. Walking beside him, clinging to his arm like a trophy, was Kayla. She was dressed in a tight white designer dress that accentuated her slight baby bump, her face caked in heavy makeup, looking around the hallway as if she owned the building.

When Scott saw me sitting on the wooden bench outside Courtroom 302, he paused, a smirking grin spreading across his face. He walked right up to me, pulling Kayla along with him.

"Look who showed up," Scott sneered, looking down his nose at me. "Dressed up for your final surrender, Avery? I brought Kayla so she could witness the exact moment you officially become my past."

Kayla giggled, running a manicured hand over Scott’s chest. "Honestly, Avery, it's getting embarrassing. Dragging this out won't change anything. Scott belongs to us now—me and the baby. You're just a bitter ex holding onto a life you can't afford."

Jerome stood up slowly from the bench, his tall, imposing figure towering over Scott’s medium build. "Mr. Collins, I suggest you and your companion save your breath for the judge. And I strongly advise you to speak with your counsel before you open your mouth again."

Scott’s eyes narrowed as he noticed Jerome's custom suit and authoritative demeanor. "Who the hell are you? Some legal aid lawyer she hired with her savings?"

Before Jerome could answer, Scott’s actual attorney, a stressed-looking man named Richard Sterling, came hurrying down the hallway, clutching a thin folder. He looked pale, sweat glistening on his forehead.

"Scott! Thank God I found you," Sterling panted, barely glancing at us. "Did you read the emergency addendum I emailed you last night?"

"Email? I was celebrating at the country club last night, Richard," Scott dismissed him with a wave of his hand. "What addendum? It’s just the probate sign-off, right? Let's get in there so I can get my money transfer authorized. The luxury yacht broker needs my deposit by three o'clock."

Sterling looked like he was about to vomit. "Scott... shut up and listen to me—"

"Bailiff! Calling the matter of Collins v. Collins and the Estate of Evelyn V. Vance!" the doors opened, and a stern voice echoed through the hall.

"We'll finish this inside, loser," Scott whispered to me with a mock salute before pulling Kayla through the double doors into the courtroom.

The courtroom was vast and quiet. Honorable Judge Margaret Higgins presided over the bench—a silver-haired woman known throughout the state for her ironclad enforcement of contract law and zero tolerance for arrogance.

Scott and Sterling sat at the defense table on the right, with Kayla sitting arrogantly in the front row of the gallery behind them. Jerome and I took our seats at the plaintiff's table on the left.

Judge Higgins adjusted her glasses and looked down at the documents before her. "We are here today on an emergency motion filed by Mrs. Avery Collins regarding the estate distribution of Evelyn V. Vance and a petition for marital asset preservation. Mr. Sterling, I have read your preliminary filings. You claim your client is the sole heir to the seven-point-three-million-dollar estate and is requesting an immediate release of funds?"

"That is correct, Your Honor," Sterling said, stepping forward, his voice trembling slightly. "My client is the primary named grandson in the trust. The decedent passed away three weeks ago, and my client is looking to settle the estate efficiently."

"And Mr. Carter," Judge Higgins turned her piercing gaze toward Jerome. "You filed an emergency injunction blocking the release of these funds and asserting a full claim on behalf of your client, Avery Collins. On what grounds?"

Scott scoffed loudly from his chair. Judge Higgins instantly slammed her gavel down with a sharp CRACK.

"Mr. Collins! You will maintain decorum in my courtroom or I will have the bailiff escort you to a holding cell. Do you understand me?"

Scott’s face flushed red, and he sank back into his chair, muttering an apology.

Jerome stood up calmly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Thank you, Your Honor. We have filed our injunction under Item IV, Section B of the Evelyn V. Vance Revocable Trust. As the court is aware, the trust contains an explicit, legally binding conditional clause regarding the marriage of Scott Collins and my client, Avery Collins."

Scott frowned, leaning over to Sterling. "What is he talking about? What clause?"

Sterling put a hand over his face, whispering frantically to Scott. "Shut up, Scott! I tried to tell you!"

Jerome continued, his voice echoing clearly throughout the courtroom. "The trust explicitly states that the principal amount of seven point three million dollars shall only be distributed to Scott Collins if he maintains a continuous, uninterrupted marriage with Avery Collins for ten full years. In the event that Mr. Collins initiates a separation, commits adultery, or attempts to dissolve the marriage prior to the ten-year mark... the entire trust forfeits immediately and transfers in full to Avery Collins."

A suffocating silence fell over the room.

Scott stood up so violently his chair screeched against the floor. "WHAT?! That's impossible! She’s lying! My grandmother loved me!"

"SIT DOWN, MR. COLLINS!" Judge Higgins thundered, bringing the gavel down twice.

Kayla leaned forward from the gallery, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "Scott? What is she talking about? Is this a joke?"

"Your Honor," Jerome presented a certified, notarized copy of the trust to the bailiff, who handed it up to the bench. "We have provided documented proof that Scott Collins and Avery Collins have been married for eight years and eleven months. Furthermore, we have submitted sworn affidavits, text messages, and call logs proving that on the afternoon of May 14th, Mr. Collins unilaterally terminated the cohabitation, evicted my client from their marital home with a two-hour notice, and informed her of his long-standing extramarital affair with Miss Kayla Jensen."

"That’s not all, Your Honor," Jerome added, pulling a second thick folder from his briefcase. "We have also submitted private investigator logs, bank records, and hotel receipts proving that Mr. Collins has been committing open, continuous adultery with Miss Jensen for the past six months—spending over forty thousand dollars of joint marital funds to finance this affair."

Scott’s face drained of all color. He looked as if he had been struck by lightning. He spun around to look at Sterling. "Richard! Fix this! Tell her she can't do this! It’s MY grandmother's money!"

Sterling looked utterly defeated. "Your Honor... my client... my client was unaware of the specific terms of Item IV..."

"Ignorance of a contract does not void a contract, Mr. Sterling!" Judge Higgins snapped, her eyes flashing with anger as she reviewed the documents. She scanned the receipts, the timeline, and the clear language of the trust.

She looked down at Scott with pure disdain. "Mr. Collins. You abandoned your wife of nearly nine years, flaunted an extramarital affair, attempted to illegally evict her from her residence, and tried to trick her into signing away her rights—all so you could rush off with your mistress and spend money that was never legally yours to begin with."

"Your Honor, please!" Kayla shrieked from the gallery, standing up. "I'm pregnant! That money belongs to our baby! She can't just take it!"

"Bailiff, remove that woman from my courtroom immediately!" Judge Higgins ordered coldness. Two armed bailiffs instantly escorted a screaming, crying Kayla out through the heavy double doors.

Scott stood frozen, trembling, looking at me with wide, panicked eyes. For the first time in his life, he looked small. He looked completely powerless.

Judge Higgins adjusted her papers and looked back down at the bench. "The language of the Evelyn V. Vance Trust is unequivocal, clear, and legally binding. Mr. Scott Collins has breached every single condition set forth by the trustor. Therefore, this court hereby orders the complete forfeiture of the trust assets by Scott Collins."

She struck the gavel with a definitive, ringing blow.

"The full sum of seven million, three hundred thousand dollars, along with all associated trust real estate holdings, is hereby awarded solely and exclusively to Mrs. Avery Collins. A temporary restraining order and asset freeze is immediately placed on all of Mr. Collins’s bank accounts pending a full financial audit for marital waste. Court is adjourned."
