Chapter 5 - The Showdown at St. Jude's

The lobby of St. Jude’s Elite Maternity Clinic was in absolute chaos. Federal agents in blue jackets were wheeling out boxes of files, while wealthy patients panicked in the hallways.
I walked past the security lines, using my old federal badge. I didn't head for the main elevators; I took the service elevator straight to the basement, where the backup generator and medical gas lines were located.
Julian was smart, but he was arrogant. He thought the only way to stop an operation was by force. He didn't realize that a hospital operates on a delicate balance of systems.
I found the main air filtration controls for Operating Room 4, where Julian had locked himself in with a skeleton staff and a heavily sedated patient under the pretense of an emergency procedure. He had the cash bag sitting right next to the anesthesia machine.
I pulled out a small canister of medical-grade nitrous oxide—laughing gas—that I had acquired from the storage room, and hooked it up directly to the intake vent of Operating Room 4's specialized ventilation system. It wouldn't harm the patient, who was already on a localized epidural and isolated oxygen, but it would affect everyone else in the room who wasn't wearing a sealed hazmat mask.
Within ten minutes, the double doors of Operating Room 4 burst open.
The scrub nurses and the assistant surgeon stumbled out into the hallway, giggling uncontrollably and feeling dizzy, completely disoriented by the concentrated gas.
Julian came out next, stumbling, his eyes bloodshot, clutching a heavy leather duffel bag filled with stolen cash and bonds. He had a surgical mask hanging off one ear, his face twisted in a mixture of confusion and rage.
"What is happening?!" he yelled, trying to clear his head.
He turned the corner and found himself staring directly into the barrel of an FBI agent's weapon. Surrounding the agent were ten heavily armed federal officers.
And standing right beside them was me.
Julian dropped the bag. The money spilled out across the sterile floor. He looked at the agents, then at the cash, and finally at me. The realization hit him like a physical blow. His empire hadn't just shifted—it had collapsed entirely, crushing him beneath the rubble.
"Eleanor..." he gasped, raising his hands slowly. "You ruined me."
May you like
"No, Julian," I said, walking up to him as the agents slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "You ruined yourself the moment you thought a mother's love was weaker than your cheap power."
As they dragged him away in chains, shouting profanities, the medical staff rushed into the operating room to safely secure the innocent patient. The monster had been defanged.
