Chapter 2 - The Silent War Begins

The cold gel on Chloe’s stomach was a stark contrast to the burning fury inside my chest. As the technician moved the transducer, the steady, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of my grandchild’s heartbeat filled the room. Chloe let out a shaky breath, her eyes welling with tears. To her, it was a moment of fragile peace. To me, it was a drumbeat of war.

Dr. Julian Thorne stepped into the room moments later. He looked immaculate—crisp white lab coat, a Rolex gleaming on his wrist, and that practiced, charming smile that had fooled the world.

"Everything looking perfect for our little miracle?" Julian asked, his voice smooth as silk. He placed a hand on Chloe’s shoulder. I watched her body instantly stiffen. It was a subtle micro-expression, but to a mother, it was a scream for help.

"Perfect, Dr. Thorne," the technician replied deferentially.

Julian looked at me, his eyes crinkling with faux warmth. "Mother-in-law. I’m so glad you could make it. We have the best team prepared for Chloe’s C-section next week. She’s in the safest hands in the country."

The threat hidden beneath his words was loud and clear. She is in my domain. I control her life.

"I’m sure she is, Julian," I replied, forcing a polite smile that didn't reach my eyes. I patted my handbag, where my phone had just vibrated.

Before marrying into this quiet life, I hadn't always been just a grandmother who baked cookies. For twenty-five years, I was the senior investigative auditor for the Federal Medical Regulatory Board. I had brought down corrupt pharmaceutical giants and exposed billionaire hospital executives. Julian thought he married a helpless, middle-aged woman’s daughter. He had no idea he had invited a trojan horse into his life.

The text message I had sent in the hallway was to Marcus Vance, my former colleague and current Director of Federal Medical Compliance.

Me: Marcus. I need a shadow audit on St. Jude’s Elite Maternity Clinic. Focus on Dr. Julian Thorne’s offshore research grants and discretionary surgical funds. I need it by tonight.

Marcus: For you, Eleanor? Consider it done. What are we looking for?

Me: Blood.

As Julian continued to spout medical jargon to Chloe, my mind was mapping out his destruction. A man as arrogant and cruel as Julian didn't stop his abuse at home. Power corrupts thoroughly. If he was willing to murder his wife under the guise of a medical malfunction, he was definitely cutting corners elsewhere.

When the ultrasound ended, Julian escorted us to the lobby. He leaned down to kiss Chloe’s cheek. "See you at home, darling. Remember, don't overexert yourself. We want everything to go exactly as planned next week."

As his car pulled away, Chloe turned to me, her voice trembling. "Mom, please, let's just go home. If he sees you looking into him, he'll speed up the delivery. He can do it, Mom. He has the board in his pocket."

"He doesn't own the sky, Chloe," I said, holding her hands. "And he doesn't own me. We are going to my house tonight. You are not stepping foot back into his palace of terror."

"He'll come for me," she sobbed.

"Let him come," I whispered. "I am counting on it."
