Chapter 6 - Sweet Justice

The courtroom was packed for the final sentencing and divorce decree hearing. The atmosphere was heavy, but for me, it felt like the first breath of fresh air in years.
Julian sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, his head bowed. The proud, arrogant CEO was completely gone, replaced by a broken convict. Next to him sat his defense attorney, who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world. In the public gallery, Beatrice and Arthur sat in faded, cheap clothes, weeping quietly, realizing that their golden goose was permanently cooked.
Elena had already taken a plea deal the week before, turning state’s evidence against Julian for his corporate embezzlement schemes in exchange for a suspended sentence and probation. Her reputation was thoroughly destroyed; she was banned from working in the corporate sector ever again.
The judge slammed his gavel down, filling the courtroom with a sharp crack that signaled the end of an era.
“In the matter of Harrington vs. Harrington,” the judge announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “The court finds the prenuptial amendments and debt acquisition agreements to be fully valid and enforceable. The defendant, Julian Harrington, has shown a flagrant disregard for the law, engaging in corporate fraud, embezzlement, and attempted grand larceny.”
The judge turned a stern gaze toward Julian. “Furthermore, the evidence of your break-in and attempted extortion against the plaintiff is absolute. Therefore, this court grants a full, absolute divorce to Clara Vance-Harrington. All remaining assets of Vanguard Logistics, including the real estate, maritime fleets, and liquid accounts, are hereby awarded solely to Clara Vance as restitution for unpaid debts and damages.”
“Additionally,” the judge continued, “for the charges of corporate fraud and felony extortion, I sentence you, Julian Harrington, to twelve years in state prison, with no possibility of parole for the first seven.”
A loud gasp shook the gallery. Beatrice let out a dramatic sob and fainted into her husband’s arms. Julian didn’t even look back. He just stared at the table, his shoulders slumped in total defeat.

Marcus leaned over to me, a proud smile on his face. “Congratulations, Clara. It is completely over. You won everything.”
“No, Marcus,” I said, looking at the decree in front of me. “I didn’t win. I just took back what was mine.”
