Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Three weeks later, the pressure had reached a boiling point. Denied any financial backing and with his corporate assets completely under my control, Julian was desperate. He had stopped showing up to court hearings, hiding out with his parents and Elena in their increasingly miserable living conditions.
But I knew a man like Julian wouldn’t go down quietly. He needed one last desperate gamble. And I gave him the perfect bait.
Marcus leaked a rumor through the industry grapevine that I was planning to sell Vanguard Logistics' entire fleet of cargo ships to an international conglomerate for pennies on the dollar to completely liquidate the company and finalize the divorce. To Julian, those ships were his pride and joy—his last remaining claim to power.
That night, my home security system chimed silently on my phone.
I was sitting in the darkened study, watching the security feeds on my laptop. A figure was moving through the gardens, using a cloned keycard that Julian had kept. But what he didn’t know was that I had allowed that specific card to remain active just for tonight.
The study door creaked open.
Julian stepped into the room, his clothes wrinkled, his hair disheveled. He looked crazed. In his hand, he held a heavy iron crowbar he had taken from the garage. Behind him, slipping through the shadows, was Elena, looking terrified but greedy, clutching a large empty duffel bag.
“I knew you’d be here, Clara,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying mix of malice and desperation. “You think you’re so smart. But you’re alone in this big house tonight.”
I turned my chair around slowly to face them. The room remained dark, lit only by the pale moonlight filtering through the windows. “Julian. And Elena. Breaking and entering? You’re really adding to your legal portfolio tonight.”
“Shut up!” Julian snarled, raising the crowbar. “We’re not here to talk. You’re going to log into your laptop right now and sign over the corporate transfer rights back to me. If you don’t, I’m going to make sure you can’t ever sign another document again. We’ll make it look like a tragic home invasion. The grieving husband inherits everything.”
Elena nodded frantically, her voice shaking. “Just do it, Clara! Sign it over! You ruined my life! I lost my job, my apartment, my reputation! You owe us!”
I looked at Elena, genuinely amused. “I owe you? You wore my clothes, drank from my mug, and slept with my husband in my bed, and you think I owe you?”
“Don’t talk to her!” Julian yelled, stepping forward, his knuckles white on the iron bar. “Sign the transfer, Clara! Now! I have nothing left to lose!”
“That’s where you’re wrong, Julian,” I said softly, leaning back in my chair. “You still have your freedom left to lose.”
I clapped my hands twice.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flooded the room with blinding brilliance. Julian and Elena shielded their eyes, gasping.
From the shadows of the adjacent library, four police officers emerged, their weapons drawn. Behind them stepped detective Henderson, a senior investigator with the financial crimes division.
“Drop the weapon, Mr. Harrington!” Detective Henderson commanded, his voice booming through the room. “Drop it right now!”
Julian froze, the crowbar trembling in his hand. He looked at the police, then at the corners of the room where high-definition hidden cameras were glowing with bright red recording lights.
“You… you set me up,” Julian whispered, dropping the crowbar to the hardwood floor with a loud, metallic clatter.
“You set yourself up, Julian,” I said, standing up and smoothy walking around the desk. “I didn’t force you to break into my home. I didn’t force you to threaten my life on camera. And I certainly didn’t force Elena to act as your accomplice.”
Elena immediately fell to her knees, sobbing hysterically. “I didn’t do anything! It was all Julian’s idea! He forced me to come! He said we’d get rich! Please don’t arrest me!”
“Take them away, officers,” Detective Henderson said.

As the handcuffs clicked loudly onto Julian’s wrists, he looked at me, tears finally spilling down his hollow cheeks. “Clara… please. I loved you. I really did. Don’t do this to me.”
I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing but a profound sense of closure. “No, Julian. You loved my money. And now, you’re going to have a lot of time to think about how much it cost you.”
