Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Confrontation

The day of the preliminary hearing arrived. The courtroom was packed with reporters, local socialites, and curious onlookers who had followed the viral drama online.

Ethan was led into the room in a bright orange jumpsuit, handcuffed at the wrists and ankles. The contrast between the man who had arrogantly sliced his steak while I starved, and the broken man shaking in shackles, was striking. He refused to look at the gallery, keeping his eyes glued to the defense table.

Victoria and Natalie sat on the defense side, looking exhausted and humiliated. Every time a camera flashed, they flinched.

I took the stand as the primary witness. The prosecutor played the audio recording first. The sound of Victoria’s toast and Natalie’s laughter filled the courtroom. Hearing it again made the hairs on my neck stand up, but I kept my composure.

"Mrs. Harper-Vance," the prosecutor asked, pointing to the large monitor displaying the medical scans of my arm. "Can you describe what happened on the night of Tuesday the 14th?"

I looked directly at Ethan. His shoulders tensed.

"My husband demanded I sign a release form to transfer eighty thousand dollars from my family trust to his sister's business," I testified, my voice resonating clearly through the microphone. "When I refused, he trapped me against the banister. He told me that everything I owned belonged to him by right of marriage. Then, he twisted my arm until the bone snapped. He told me if I told anyone, he would make sure I never walked again."

A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom.

Ethan’s attorney tried to cross-examine me, attempting to paint me as a bitter wife exaggerating a domestic dispute to gain leverage in a divorce.

"Isn't it true, Mrs. Vance, that you have a history of controlling the family finances and emasculating your husband?" the attorney asked aggressively.

"I control my finances," I corrected him sharply, using my bank executive training to project absolute authority. "And if protecting oneself from systemic fraud and physical mutilation is considered 'controlling,' then yes. I am entirely in control."

The judge hammered his gavel down, silencing the murmurs in the crowd.

Next, the prosecution introduced the financial audit documents. The sheer volume of evidence was undeniable. Page after page showed Ethan’s forged signatures, the shell companies, and the direct path of stolen money funding Victoria and Natalie’s personal credit cards.

By the end of the day, the judge looked at Ethan with utter disgust. "Based on the overwhelming physical, digital, and audio evidence presented, this court finds more than sufficient grounds to proceed to a full trial. Bail is officially revoked. The defendant will remain in custody."

As Ethan was led away, he finally looked at me. His eyes weren't angry anymore. They were filled with the realization that his reign of terror was completely, irreversibly over.
