Chapter 2 - The Audit

The silence of the empty house was deafening after the police and the Vances left. I spent the night on the sofa, unable to sleep because of the physical pain in my arm and the adrenaline coursing through my veins.
By 8:00 AM the next morning, my office looked like a war room. Marcus Vance sat across from me, surrounded by high-ranking forensic accountants I had hired from my former employer, the national bank.
"Clara, you were right to stop that eighty thousand dollar transfer," Marcus said, sliding a thick ledger toward me. "But it's much worse than we thought. Ethan wasn't just trying to save Natalie's boutique. He has been systematically siphoning money from your joint household accounts for the past eighteen months."
"How much?" I asked, my voice tight.
"Close to four hundred thousand dollars," the lead accountant, Sarah, chimed in. "He disguised the withdrawals as 'property maintenance' and 'consulting fees' paid to a shell company. That shell company is registered under his mother’s maiden name. Victoria and Natalie have been living a luxury lifestyle completely funded by your salary and your family's trust."
A cold rage washed over me. The diamonds Victoria wore to dinner last night, the designer bags Natalie flaunted on her Instagram—they weren't paid for by Ethan's real estate commissions. They were paid for by my blood, sweat, and tears. And when I finally noticed and blocked the largest transfer, he broke my bones to silence me.
"Can we trace it directly to his personal knowledge of the fraud?" I asked.
"Easily," Sarah nodded. "He signed every single authorization wire. And because you never gave written consent for these specific corporate transfers from the trust account, this isn't just a civil dispute. This is grand larceny and bank fraud."
Just then, my phone buzzed on the desk. It was an unknown number. I answered it and put it on speaker.
"Clara! You absolute monster!" Victoria's voice boomed through the speaker. She was crying and screaming simultaneously. "Ethan is sitting in a holding cell! They won't set bail because of the 'severity of the injury' and the recording! Do you want to destroy this family?!"
"Victoria," I said calmly, leaning back in my chair. "There is no 'Vance family.' There is only a group of parasites who got caught. Where are you staying?"
"We are at a cheap motel near the highway!" Natalie shrieked in the background. "It smells like cigarettes, Clara! My skin is breaking out! You have to drop the charges!"
"I don't drop charges. The State of New York does," I replied coldly. "And as for the money you stole from my trust to buy your boutique's inventory? I've already filed a lien against your business. By tomorrow afternoon, the bank will seize your entire stock."
A sharp gasp came from the other end of the line.
May you like
"You wouldn't," Victoria whispered, her voice finally dropping its arrogant edge, replaced by pure terror.
"Watch me," I said, and ended the call.
