Chapter 2 - THE RECKONING AT THE TABLE

The heavy oak doors of the Vanguard estate didn’t just open; they bounced off the walls.

Marcus Vance, the Global Head of Corporate Security for Vanguard Enterprises, strode into the dining room. He wasn't alone. Behind him were four men in tailored black suits, their expressions carved from granite. Marcus ignored the pristine Persian rug, the smell of roasted duck, and the stunned expressions of the Vanguard family. His eyes locked onto me.

Seeing the dirty water dripping from my hair and the puddle forming around my chair, Marcus’s jaw tightened. The air in the room instantly turned to ice.

"CEO Cassidy," Marcus said, his voice echoing like thunder through the vaulted ceiling. He bowed his head deeply. "The perimeter is secure. The legal blocks have been initiated. We await your command."

Brendan’s fork clattered against his porcelain plate. He blinked, looking from Marcus to me, and then back to Marcus. "Marcus? What the hell are you doing here? And... what did you just call her?"

Brendan was the Regional Director of Marketing at Vanguard Enterprises. He knew Marcus. In fact, Brendan had spent the last three months trying to schedule a five-minute meeting with Marcus to beg for a larger security budget for his department. To Brendan, Marcus was an unreachable corporate god. To see this man bowing to the woman he had just called a "pregnant burden" was a glitch in his reality.

"Brendan, call the police!" Diane demanded, her voice shrill as she stood up, clutching her wine glass. "This trash brought her street thugs into my home! Look at the mess they're making!"

Marcus didn't even look at her. He waved his hand, and two of his men stepped forward, placing a sleek, waterproof briefcase on the table, right next to the puddle of dirty water. They popped the latches. Inside were stacks of legal documents stamped with the glowing red seal of Protocol Seven.

"Cassidy, stop playing games," Brendan scoffed, though his voice shook slightly. He stood up, trying to assert his dominance. "You think hiring actors is going to scare us? You’re a high school dropout from the slums. I married you out of charity, and I divorced you because you were dragging me down. Who gave you the right to bring these people here?"

Jessica chimed in, her face twisted in a smug grin. "Oh, Brendan, don't you see? She's desperate. She knows you're with a real woman now—someone from a family with actual status. She probably spent her entire divorce settlement renting these suits just to ruin our dinner."

I didn't say a word. I reached over, took a clean linen napkin from an empty place setting, and calmly began to wipe the dirty water from my face. Every movement I made was slow, deliberate, and dripping with authority.

"Brendan," I said softly, my voice cutting through the tension. "Check your phone."

Brendan frowned, pulling his iPhone out of his pocket. "Why would I—"

BZZZ.

The phone vibrated. Then it vibrated again. And again. A barrage of notifications lit up his screen. At the exact same moment, Richard Vanguard—Brendan’s father and the Chief Financial Officer of the domestic branch—had his phone ring. Then Diane’s phone chimed. Even Jessica’s phone began to buzz frantically.

Brendan’s eyes widened as he read his screen. "What... what is this? 'Termination of Employment effective immediately due to gross ethical violations and breach of corporate conduct.' This... this has to be a mistake. I'm the Regional Director!"

"Look at the sender, Brendan," I whispered.

He scrolled up. The email came directly from the Sovereign Board of Directors. The signature at the bottom read: Office of the Owner & Majority Shareholder: C.V. Enterprises.

"C.V..." Brendan muttered. "No. No, that stands for Crimson Vanguard. The anonymous founder..." He looked up at me, his face losing all its color. "No. It’s not possible. You're Cassidy Vance. C.V...?"

"You always thought my maiden name was a coincidence, didn't you?" I asked, a cold smile finally touching my lips. "When your father begged for a bailout for his failing logistics company five years ago, he didn't know he was signing a contract that absorbed the Vanguard name into my conglomerate. I let your family keep the title of 'founders' because I wanted to see if you had actual talent. Instead, you used my money to buy this mansion, this rug, and your inflated egos."

"Lies!" Diane shrieked, slamming her hand on the table. "Richard, tell her she's lying! We built this family! We are the Vanguards!"

Richard didn't answer his wife. He was staring at his own tablet, his hands trembling so violently that he dropped the device onto the table. "It’s... it's all gone," Richard whispered, his voice sounding hollow. "The corporate credit cards... frozen. The offshore executive accounts... locked. The shares... they're being clawed back under the 'Morality and Reputation' clause."

Richard looked at me, horror written across his aging face. "Protocol Seven... it's the hostile liquidation clause. You're dissolving the domestic branch. You're destroying us."

Jessica’s smug smile completely vanished. She clutched Brendan’s arm. "Brendan, do something! What does she mean she owns it? You told me you were the heir to the empire! You told me she was just a gold-digging mistake!"

Brendan couldn't answer. He was staring at the puddle of dirty water on the floor, the reality of what his mother had just done slowly sinking into his brain.

"Marcus," I said, standing up. The wet fabric of my dress clung to my pregnant stomach, but I held my head high. "Clear the premises. This house was bought with Vanguard corporate funds. Since the branch is liquidated, the asset is seized. They have ten minutes to pack their personal clothes. Everything else stays."

"You can't do this!" Brendan yelled, stepping toward me. "I am the father of that child!"

Marcus instantly stepped between us, his massive frame towering over Brendan. One of Marcus's men grabbed Brendan’s wrist, twisting it just enough to force him to his knees.

"Ah! Let go!" Brendan screamed.

"Ten minutes, Mr. Vanguard," Marcus said coldly. "Or my men will assist you out of the window."
