CHAPTER 3 — The Truth Everyone Ignored

CHAPTER 3 — The Truth Everyone Ignored

The investigation continued late into the night.

The birthday decorations remained hanging on the walls.

The cake was still untouched.

A celebration that was supposed to hide Valeria’s pain had become the place where everything was finally revealed.

The investigators collected the documents.

The advocate spoke privately with Valeria.

For the first time in almost a year, someone asked her a simple question:

“Are you safe?”

Valeria almost laughed.

Because nobody had asked her that in so long.

Not her friends.

Not her husband’s family.

Not even herself.

She looked toward her father.

Ernesto stood by the window, watching quietly.

“Yes,” she finally answered.

“I am now.”

Across the room, Julián sat with his arms crossed.

He still believed he could control the situation.

“You’re exaggerating everything,” he said.

“You’re destroying our marriage because of one mistake.”

Valeria turned around.

“One mistake?”

Her voice trembled.

“You broke my phone because you didn’t like who I talked to.”

“You emptied my account because you said I spent too much.”

“You told me my father was the reason I was becoming rebellious.”

She took a breath.

“And when I tried to leave, you told me nobody would believe me.”

The room became painfully quiet.

Julián looked away.

Because for the first time, he realized everyone was listening.

Not to his excuses.

To her.

Ofelia tried one final defense.

“Valeria, you should think carefully. A woman without her husband has nothing.”

Ernesto turned toward her.

“That belief is exactly why women stay silent.”

May you like

He walked beside his daughter.

“And my daughter will never be silent again.”
