CHAPTER 2 — The Evidence Hidden Beneath the Celebration

CHAPTER 2 — The Evidence Hidden Beneath the Celebration

No one moved.

The music had stopped completely.

The only sound inside the Salgado house was the soft hum of the air conditioner fighting against the August heat.

Ofelia remained on her knees, her fingers still wrapped around the black trash bag.

For the first time all evening, she looked afraid.

“Ernesto…” she whispered.

Her voice was no longer sharp.

No longer confident.

“What is this?”

Ernesto walked closer, his expression unreadable.

“The question isn’t what this is.”

He looked toward the investigators.

“The question is why you were so desperate to hide it.”

The forensic examiner carefully opened the bag.

Inside were several documents sealed inside a plastic folder.

A loan agreement.

Bank statements.

Copies of property records.

And a document with Valeria’s signature.

Except Valeria had never signed it.

She watched from the terrace as the truth she had carried alone for months finally appeared in front of everyone.

Julián shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.”

He forced a laugh.

“My mother keeps paperwork. That doesn’t prove anything.”

The investigator looked at him.

“No one said it did.”

A pause.

“But the forged signature on these documents will.”

The room went silent again.

Ofelia stood slowly.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Ernesto looked at her.

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“You made the mistake when you believed my daughter had no one.”

Valeria closed her eyes.

For months, she had imagined this moment.

But she never imagined feeling so empty.

Not victorious.

Not powerful.

Just exhausted.

Julián stepped toward the terrace.

“Valeria.”

Everyone looked at her.

His voice changed instantly.

The cruel confidence disappeared.

Now he sounded almost gentle.

“Tell them this is all a misunderstanding.”

Valeria stared at him.

The man who had promised to protect her.

The man who had whispered apologies after every violent outburst.

The man who always convinced her that tomorrow would be different.

She slowly walked back inside.

“No.”

One word.

But it changed everything.

Julián’s face hardened.

“You’re choosing him over your husband?”

Valeria shook her head.

“No.”

May you like

She looked directly at him.

“I’m choosing myself.”
