Chapter 4 - Stripping the Fortress

Over the next two weeks, the systematic dismantling of the Bennett family empire proceeded with surgical precision.
With Daniel locked away without bail, Eleanor Thorne and I executed a full legal takeover of every asset they had stolen. Because the $340,000 Gloria embezzled had been funneled into real estate and luxury goods, the court granted us a writ of attachment.
On a bright Tuesday morning, I stood in the lobby of Gloria’s high-rise penthouse, accompanied by a court-appointed marshal and a team of movers.
Gloria and Vanessa were sitting on a bare mattress in the middle of the living room. The designer furniture, the expensive artwork, and the rows of luxury shoes and handbags that Vanessa had purchased with my stolen credit cards were already packed into cardboard boxes labeled PROPERTY OF CLAIRE VANCE.
"You're a monster," Vanessa hissed, her eyes red and puffy. She was wearing a cheap tracksuit, her expensive extensions looking messy and unkept. "You're taking my clothes? My jewelry? How am I supposed to live?"
"Those clothes were paid for by the sweat of my employees, Vanessa," I said, looking down at her calmly. "Every luxury weekend you spent in Miami, every diamond bracelet you bragged about on Instagram, was funded by a forged invoice that your mother stole from my company. You aren't a socialite. You're a receiver of stolen goods."
Gloria stood up, shaking, her hands clutching a cheap plastic bag containing her remaining personal documents. "Claire... please. Leave us the jewelry. It's all we have left. We have no money for food. We're staying in a dingy motel on the edge of town. Have you no mercy?"
"Mercy?" I walked up to Gloria, looking at the woman who, just two weeks ago, had toasted my abuse with a glass of expensive wine. "When Daniel slapped me across the face, you told him a wife needs discipline. When I was working eighteen-hour days to keep this family afloat, you were plotting with his mistress to drain my accounts. You didn't show me mercy, Gloria. You showed me predation. I am simply balancing the ledger."
The court marshal stepped forward. "Ladies, the moving team needs to clear this room. You need to vacate the premises immediately. The new owner takes possession of the property at noon."
"New owner?" Gloria gasped. "Who bought it?"
May you like
"I did," I replied, pulling the new deed from my bag. "I bought the foreclosure debt from the bank. I'm converting this entire penthouse into a shelter and counseling center for women fleeing domestic violence. Your legacy of abuse will fund their healing."
Vanessa let out a choked sob, grabbing her mother’s arm as the movers began rolling away the final pieces of furniture. They walked out of the penthouse, their heads bowed, carrying nothing but a few plastic bags of cheap clothes, completely stripped of the wealth they had stolen from me.
