Chapter 2 - The Sound of Shattered Illusions

Before Daniel could even process the destruction of his public reputation, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion rattled with a thunderous knock.
"Police! Open up! We have a warrant for the arrest of Daniel Bennett!"
The booming voice echoed from the foyer, cutting through the panicked breathing in the dining room like a knife.
Daniel froze, his phone slipping from his trembling fingers and hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud. His mother, Gloria, let out a terrified shriek, instantly dropping her wineglass. The red wine spilled across the pristine white tablecloth, pooling around the legal evidence like a fresh bloodstain.
"Claire... what did you do?" Vanessa whimpered, her previous arrogance completely evaporating. She gripped her mother’s shoulder, her eyes darting toward the back exit. "You called the cops? Over a stupid argument?"
"It wasn't an argument, Vanessa. It was assault," I replied, walking past them toward the foyer.
I unlocked the massive front doors. Standing on the porch were Detective Marcus Vance, a seasoned investigator from the domestic crimes division, and three uniform officers. Behind them, the flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers painted the driveway in a stark, unforgiving rhythm.
Beside Detective Vance stood a woman dressed in a sharp grey trench coat—Eleanor Thorne, the senior partner of the city's most formidable family law firm, and the woman I had spent the last six months secretly working with.
"Good evening, Claire," Detective Vance said, his eyes immediately assessing the swelling on my lip. His jaw tightened. "Are you alright?"
"I am now, Detective," I said, stepping aside to let them in. "The primary suspect is in the dining room. The evidence of the assault that occurred exactly twenty-five minutes ago is on the table, along with the financial records of the secondary suspects, Gloria and Vanessa Bennett."
"Excellent. Secure the room," Vance ordered his officers.
As the police marched into the dining room, Daniel tried to put on his usual mask of charm and authority. He stood up, smoothing his shirt, though his hands were shaking uncontrollably.
"Officers, thank God you're here," Daniel said, his voice straining for a tone of reasonable calm. "My wife is having a severe psychological breakdown. She’s been hallucinating, making wild accusations, and she actually attacked me in the kitchen. I had to restrain her in self-defense."
Detective Vance didn't even smile. He walked straight up to Daniel, pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt, and grabbed Daniel’s right wrist.
"Daniel Bennett, you are under arrest for domestic assault, battery, and coercion," Vance announced, twisting Daniel’s arm behind his back. The sharp click-clack of the handcuffs locking into place was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard.
"You can't do this!" Gloria screamed, throwing herself over the table. "Do you know who my son is? He is the Managing Director of Bennett Capital! He pays more taxes than you make in a year!"
"Not anymore, Mrs. Bennett," Eleanor Thorne spoke up, stepping into the dining room and placing her briefcase on the table. She opened it and pulled out a stack of federal asset-freeze notices. "As of fifteen minutes ago, a federal judge signed an emergency injunction freezing every personal and corporate account tied to Bennett Capital, pending a full forensic investigation into grand larceny and embezzlement from my client, Claire Vance-Bennett."
Daniel twisted his head around, his eyes wild with venom as he glared at me. "You think you're clever, Claire? You think you can ruin me? My lawyers will have me out on bail before midnight! And when I get back, I will strip you of every single penny you have! You'll be living on the streets!"
"There won't be any bail tonight, Mr. Bennett," Detective Vance said coldly, pushing him toward the door. "The District Attorney has already reviewed the footage of you threatening to 'bury her where no one will find her' from three weeks ago. You're being held without bond as a flight risk and a danger to the victim."
As the officers dragged Daniel out of the room, he kicked at the furniture, screaming curses at me until his voice faded down the driveway.
Gloria and Vanessa stood frozen by the table, looking around the massive, luxurious room that they had treated as their personal playground for two years.
"Now," Eleanor Thorne said, turning to the two women with a frosty smile. "As for the two of you. You have exactly ten minutes to pack one suitcase each. Anything else left in this house tomorrow morning will be seized as partial restitution for the $340,000 you stole from my client. If you are still on this property by 9:00 PM, you will be arrested for criminal trespassing."

Vanessa looked at her mother, her lips trembling. "Mom... where are we going to go? All our cards are declined!"
Gloria didn't answer. She just stared at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of hatred and absolute, hollow defeat. For the first time since I had met her, the great Gloria Bennett looked small, old, and completely broken.
