Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By late afternoon, the courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. The news of a prominent real estate mogul being arrested at his own divorce trial had spread through the city like wildfire.
When Judge Vance returned to the bench, she didn't waste any time.
"We are back on the record," she stated, looking down at Arthur Sterling. "Mr. Sterling, does your client wish to present any counter-evidence, or are we ready to proceed to the final judgment?"
Sterling stood up, his hands empty. "Your Honor, my client wishes to exercise his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. We have no further arguments to present at this time."
"Very well," Judge Vance said, adjusting her papers. "The court finds the evidence presented by the plaintiff, Claire Vance-Mercer, to be absolute, overwhelming, and undisputed. The defendant's behavior over the course of this marriage represents the most egregious case of domestic cruelty and financial predation this court has seen in twenty years."
She picked up her pen, signing the final decree with a sharp, heavy stroke.
"Therefore, it is ordered that the marriage between Daniel Mercer and Claire Vance-Mercer is dissolved effectively immediately. The plaintiff is awarded 100% ownership of the marital residence, all real estate holdings under Mercer Development, and full control of the corporate entity itself. Furthermore, a constructive trust is placed over the $4.2 million currently held in the Cayman Island accounts, to be returned entirely to the plaintiff as restitution for marital waste."
The gallery erupted into applause. I sat at my table, closing my eyes as a single, hot tear rolled down my cheek. It wasn't a tear of sadness. It was the feeling of twelve years of suffocating, crushing weight finally lifting from my chest. I could breathe. Really breathe.
"But we are not finished," Judge Vance continued, her voice cutting through the cheers. She looked over at the double doors at the back of the room. Two city detectives stepped inside, holding a set of heavy iron restraints.
"Daniel Mercer, pursuant to the criminal complaint filed by the District Attorney based on the medical and digital evidence presented today, a warrant has been issued for your arrest on charges of felony aggravated assault, continuous domestic violence, and witness intimidation. Bail is denied pending your formal arraignment tomorrow morning. Take him into custody."
Daniel stood up, his face gray, his eyes hollow. As the detectives approached him, he looked across the courtroom at me. The terrifying, powerful man who had ruled my life with a fist was gone. In his place was a pathetic, small coward who had finally run out of lies.
"Claire..." he whispered, his voice cracking as the detectives forced his arms behind his back. "Please... you can't do this to me. I'll lose everything. The company... my life... I'll die in there."
May you like
I stood up, picked up my heavy wool coat, and slid it back over my shoulders, covering the scars that had finally served their ultimate purpose.
"You didn't lose everything, Daniel," I said, looking him dead in the eye as the detectives pulled him toward the exit. "You just finally paid the bill for what you took. Goodbye."
