Chapter 3 - The Falling Dominos

Arthur Sterling stood up slowly, his posture entirely deflated. He didn't look at Daniel. A seasoned attorney knows when a ship has already hit the iceberg; his only job now was to make sure he didn't drown with the captain.

"Your Honor... the defense requests a fifteen-minute recess to consult with our client," Sterling said quietly.

"Granted," Judge Vance said, her eyes fixed on Daniel with utter contempt. "But before we recess, this court is issuing an emergency freeze on every account listed in Exhibit C. Furthermore, given the severity of the physical evidence presented by Mrs. Mercer, I am instructing the court bailiff to contact the District Attorney’s domestic violence unit immediately. Mr. Mercer is not to leave this building."

The moment the judge stepped down from the bench, the courtroom erupted into chaos. Reporters who had been tipped off by Mara Chen began rushing out the back doors to call their editors.

Daniel turned to me, his chest heaving as he marched across the aisle, ignoring his lawyer’s attempts to restrain him. He stopped just two feet away from my table, the security guards stepping forward instantly, their hands resting on their holsters.

"You think you won?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, quiet malice. "You think you can just take my company, Claire? I made you. You were nothing before I married you. You were a broken little girl with a dead-end degree. If you ruin my name, I swear to God, you won't live long enough to spend a single dime of that money."

Twelve years ago, those words would have sent me into a panic attack. Six months ago, they would have made me lock myself in the bathroom and cry.

Today, I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a small, silver digital voice recorder. The little red light was glowing brightly.

"Thank you, Daniel," I said, holding it up so he could see it clearly. "That’s another count of witness intimidation and terroristic threats, recorded in front of four officers of the court. You really should have let me teach you about the rules of evidence before you started acting like a criminal."

Daniel stared at the recorder, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

Behind him, Lauren was frantically digging through her purse, trying to make a phone call, but Mara Chen walked into the courtroom, flanked by two federal agents from the Internal Revenue Service. Mara looked at Lauren, then at the diamond bracelet on her wrist, and gave her a cold, victorious smile.

"Ms. Vale?" the lead agent said, stepping up to the defense table and pulling a gold badge from his suit pocket. "I am Special Agent Miller with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division. We have a federal warrant for your arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and tax evasion. Please put your hands behind your back."

"No! Wait!" Lauren screamed as the agent clicked the handcuffs around her wrists. "It was Daniel! He made me do it! He told me his wife was crazy and wouldn't notice! Look at his house! Look at his cars! He’s the one who stole it!"

"You'll have plenty of time to tell us about Daniel at the federal plaza, Ms. Vale," Agent Miller said, ruthlessly leading her out through the side door as she sobbed, her high heels clicking frantically against the floor.

Daniel watched his mistress get dragged away, his eyes wide with a sudden, crushing realization. The fortress of wealth, charm, and power he had built over twelve years hadn't just cracked. It had completely imploded.
