Chapter 4 - The Retaliation

The next three weeks were a brutal legal chess match.
Even from behind the bars of a maximum-security holding cell, Victor Hale refused to go down quietly. Because his assets were frozen, his high-priced corporate defense lawyers initially walked away, but a mysterious benefactor—one of the corrupt city council members Victor had kept on his payroll for years—quietly funneled cash into a new defense fund.
Suddenly, a smear campaign began in the local media.
“Disgruntled Stepdaughter and Accountant Husband Fabricate Abuse Allegations to Seize Construction Empire,” one headline read. They leaked heavily edited audio clips from Claire’s childhood, trying to paint her as unstable, manipulative, and vengeful. They even threatened to evict Eleanor from her private medical facility, claiming that since the funds were frozen under a criminal cloud, the hospital could no longer legally treat her.
One evening, Claire sat at the dining table of our apartment, her face buried in her hands. The stress was taking its toll. The media trucks were parked outside our building, and every time she opened her phone, she was bombarded with vitriol from strangers online.
"They're turning everyone against us, Daniel," she whispered, her voice cracked with exhaustion. "My mother called me today from a burner phone. She cursed me. She said if she dies because her treatment stops, it's my fault. Maybe... maybe I shouldn't have said anything. Maybe the silence was better."
I walked over, pulling her chair out and lifting her chin so she had to look into my eyes.
"Look at me, Claire," I said fiercely. "Silence is exactly what allows monsters to breathe. They want you to feel guilty. They want you to break so you’ll refuse to testify at the grand jury hearing next week. But they don't know who they're dealing with."
I reached into my briefcase and pulled out a fresh stack of legal documents, dropping them on the table.
"What is this?" she asked, wiping a tear from her cheek.
"This is an injunction I filed this afternoon with the federal court," I smiled slightly. "Because Eleanor’s medical care was directly tied to the corporate fraud, the state has officially categorized her as a material witness under protective custody. The government is now fully funding her medical treatments at a superior, independent federal hospital. Victor can't touch her care, and neither can his corrupt friends."

Claire gasped, a weight instantly lifting from her shoulders. "And the media?"
"The media is about to receive an explosive counter-delivery," I said, tapping my laptop. "Tomorrow morning, Mara Singh is holding a live press conference. We aren't just releasing the abuse evidence, Claire. We are releasing the entire list of politicians, judges, and media executives who took bribes from Hale Construction over the last decade. When that bomb drops, Victor's defense fund is going to vanish overnight because his friends will be too busy hiring their own lawyers."
