Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Armor

Victor frowned, annoyed by my comment, and pulled out his phone. He glanced at the screen, expecting a routine update from one of his late-night concrete foremen. Instead, his brow furrowed as he read the text alert from Apex National Bank.
He tapped the screen rapidly, his thumb moving with increasing agitation. He tried to open his private banking app, but a red banner flashed across the screen: Error 403: Account Restricted. Contact Corporate Compliance.
"What the hell is this?" Victor muttered under his breath, completely forgetting about us for a moment. He stepped away to dial a number, his voice rising in anger as he reached his personal banker’s emergency line. "Yeah, this is Victor Hale. Why is my primary corporate account showing a zero balance restriction? Fix it. Now."
There was a long pause. Even from a few feet away, I could hear the panicked, stuttering voice of the bank manager on the other end of the line. “Mr. Hale... we didn't do this. It’s a Title 18 Federal Asset Seizure Order. It came directly from the State Attorney General’s office. All connected lines of credit, personal accounts, and corporate holdings are locked pending a criminal investigation.”
Victor’s face went from an arrogant flush to a sickly, ash-gray color. The whiskey glass in his hand began to tremble, the ice cubes rattling against the crystal.
"What investigation?" Victor hissed, his voice cracking. "On what grounds?!"
“The warrant cites economic coercion, witness tampering, and felony tax evasion, sir. They’ve also flagged the medical trust fund for Eleanor Hale due to suspected commingling of illegal offshore funds.”
Victor abruptly hung up the phone, his breathing shallow. He turned around, his eyes wild as they scanned the room. When his gaze landed on Claire, the realization hit him like a physical blow. The absolute terror he usually saw in her eyes was gone. Instead, she was standing tall, her chin lifted, watching him with a cold, quiet dignity.
"You," Victor whispered, taking a menacing step toward her. "What did you do, you ungrateful little bitch? What did you tell them?"
Before he could get within arm's reach of my wife, I stepped squarely into his path. The quiet, polite "paper-pusher" persona was gone. I looked down at him with the cold, unyielding gaze of a prosecutor who had just pinned his prey.
"Don't address my wife, Victor," I said, my voice low but carrying a lethal weight. "And don't look at her. Your access to her, your leverage over her, and your ownership of her silence ended exactly twenty minutes ago."
"Do you know who I am?!" Victor snarled, trying to puff out his chest, though the sweat breaking out on his forehead betrayed his panic. "I built this city! I have the mayor on speed dial! I will have your job, your license, and I’ll make sure both of you end up in a ditch by sunrise!"
May you like
"The mayor just received a copy of your offshore ledger via a secure federal server," I replied smoothly. "And as for your friends in the police department, they’re currently busy executing a search warrant at your corporate headquarters in downtown. If I were you, I’d stop worrying about us and start worrying about the two black SUVs that just pulled up into the hotel courtyard."
Through the glass doors of the ballroom, the flashing blue and red lights of unmarked law enforcement vehicles suddenly painted the walls in brilliant shades of authority.
