Chapter 2: The Serpent’s Strike

The atmosphere inside the Reed Medical boardroom the following morning was suffocating. Board members in bespoke suits sat in silence, their eyes darting between Clara, who sat at the head of the table in her signature ash-gray dress, and Julian Reed, who stood confidently at the front of the room near a large projector screen.

John sat directly to Clara’s right. For the first time in his life, he didn't look like a boy waiting for permission to speak. His jaw was set, his shoulders squared.

"The evidence is irrefutable," Julian announced, clicking a remote to show the viral deepfaked video, followed by a series of doctored financial statements. "Clara Reed has used the Reed Family Trust as her personal piggy bank to fund her housing projects, all while suppressing my nephew John's rightful inheritance and staging a massive public scandal to ruin the Vale family. The public is boycotting our medical supplies. Our valuation has plummeted by twelve percent in twenty-four hours."

Julian turned to the board, his voice dropping to a theatrical, solemn tone. "For the survival of my brother’s legacy, I move for an immediate vote to strip Clara Reed of her trustee status and appoint myself as interim sole custodian of the Reed estate."

"I second the motion," called out Director Vance, an old ally of Michael’s who had secretly been on Julian’s payroll for years.

"Before you cast your votes," Clara's voice cut through the room. She didn't use a microphone, yet her calm, steady tone silenced the murmurs instantly. "I believe you should look at the actual registry of the Swiss shell company, Aegis Holdings, that Julian recently established."

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "Clara, please. Do not deflect from your own corruption with wild conspiracy theories."

Nora Whitman stood up, plugging her laptop into the boardroom system. The projector screen changed. The deepfaked video vanished, replaced by a live, certified document from the Swiss Federal Department of Justice.

"Yesterday afternoon, with the assistance of international forensic auditors, we unsealed the ultimate beneficial ownership of Aegis Holdings," Nora announced clearly. "The principal shareholder is Julian Reed. And over the past eighteen months, twenty-four core patents for Reed Medical’s oncology treatments were transferred to this entity. If Julian is voted in as trustee today, Aegis Holdings will file a patent infringement lawsuit against Reed Medical tomorrow, forcing this company into liquidation so Julian can buy the assets for pennies on the dollar."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members turned on Julian, shouting demands for an explanation.

Julian’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson. He slammed his hands on the table. "This is a fabrication! A desperate play by a woman who knows her time is up! Board members, look at the bylaws! Clara’s voting control expires the moment John turns thirty or if she is deemed a liability. The deepfaked video proves she is a liability!"

"The video is a fake, Uncle Julian," John said, standing up. He looked around the room, meeting the eyes of every board member. "I was there that night. I was the fool who almost let Isabella and her father destroy this family. Clara didn't frame anyone. She saved me from my own arrogance. And as for my inheritance... I officially waive my right to assume control of the trust when I turn thirty next month. I request that Clara remain sole trustee indefinitely."

Julian gasped, staring at his nephew as if he had grown a second head. "You idiot! You're giving away billions to a woman who isn't even your mother!"

"She is my mother," John said firmly, his voice echoing with absolute conviction. "She’s the only one who stayed."

Seeing his coup failing, Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits. He leaned in close to Clara, whispering so only she and John could hear. "You think you’ve won this round, Clara? Check your phone. You might have the board, but I have something you value much more."

Clara’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out.

It was a text message from an unknown number, containing a real-time photograph of the Laura Reed Family Housing Center in Chicago. Standing outside the building, talking to a social worker, was Isabella Vale—out on bail pending her appeal—accompanied by a rough-looking man holding a heavy container of industrial accelerant.

The text read: “Sign the trustee transfer by noon, or the sanctuary burns with everyone inside.”
