Chapter 4 - Healing and Hidden Truths

With Vanessa behind bars awaiting trial, the long and arduous process of healing began. I moved my mother back to our house, but the house felt tainted by the memories of Vanessa's cruelty. So, I made a decision: I sold the mansion and bought a beautiful, sunlit bungalow on the coast, a place filled with large windows, fresh sea breezes, and no dark corners.
I asked Elena to stay with us, not as a maid, but as a properly salaried, professional medical manager for my mother, with full benefits and her own private guest house on the property.
"Mr. Daniel, this is too much," Elena had protested when I showed her the contract. "I looked after your mother because I love her like my own grandmother. I didn't do it for money."
"I know you didn't, Elena," I replied gently. "And that is exactly why you deserve this. You risked your life and your legal status to protect her. Speaking of which, my attorney Marcus is handling your immigration paperwork. We are applying for a special crime-victim visa that will grant you a permanent green card for assisting the police. You never have to fear being deported again."
Elena broke down in tears, covering her face. For years, she had lived under the shadow of Vanessa’s threats, terrified that a single misstep would send her back to a dangerous situation in her home country. Now, she was safe.
Over the next four months, the transformation in my mother was nothing short of a miracle. Under Elena’s dedicated care, proper nutrition, and correct medication, Mom regained her strength. She began to use a walker instead of her wheelchair, and the laughter that Vanessa had suppressed for so long returned to our home.
I found myself watching Elena when she didn't notice. I watched her patience as she helped my mother with her physical therapy, her bright laugh that echoed through the kitchen, and the way her eyes lit up when she spoke about her dream of one day studying nursing. She was beautiful, not just outwardly, but possessed a profound strength and purity of heart that I had never encountered in my life.
One evening, after my mother had gone to sleep, Elena and I sat on the back deck, listening to the crashing of the ocean waves.
"Thank you for everything, Daniel," she said softly, using my first name for the first time instead of 'Mr. Daniel'. "A year ago, I felt so alone in this country. I thought no one would ever listen to a girl like me over someone like Vanessa."
"You were never alone, Elena," I said, turning to look at her. "I just regret it took me so long to get home and see the truth. I spent fifteen years building security systems to protect assets, but I failed to protect the people who mattered most. You did my job for me."
"You didn't fail," she said, placing a gentle hand over mine. "You built the network that caught her. You saved us in the end."
Her touch sent a warm current through me. In that quiet moment under the stars, I realized that my feelings for Elena had grown into something far deeper than gratitude. She was the anchor our family had desperately needed, and my heart had quietly belonged to her for months.
Meanwhile, in the county jail, Vanessa's life was a living nightmare. Used to luxury spas and fine dining, she was now confined to a concrete cell, wearing a coarse orange jumpsuit. Her defense lawyer, realizing the futility of fighting the high-definition video evidence, was desperately trying to negotiate a plea deal.

But I had instructed Marcus to reject any plea that didn't involve maximum jail time.
"She didn't show mercy to my mother, and she didn't show mercy to Elena," I told Marcus during a legal update meeting. "We go to trial. Let the world see exactly what she is."
