Chapter 3 - The Fall of Vanessa

At 8:45 AM, Vanessa sent me a text message: I'm pulling up to the downtown branch of Chase Bank. If my access isn't restored by 9:00, I call the asylum.
I didn't reply. I was sitting in an unmarked police vehicle parked across the street from the bank, alongside Detective Ramirez of the Fraud and Elder Abuse Division. Marcus sat in the back seat, holding a certified copy of the emergency restraining order and arrest warrants.
Right on time, Vanessa’s sleek white Mercedes pulled into the bank's valet lane. She stepped out, wearing a designer trench coat, oversized sunglasses, and a smirk that screamed entitlement. She walked into the grand lobby of the bank like she owned it.
"Target is inside," Detective Ramirez spoke into his radio. "Move in."
I followed the detectives into the lobby, staying a few paces behind. Vanessa was at the premier client desk, loudly demanding to see the branch manager.
"My husband had a glitch on our joint accounts," she was telling the banker haughtily. "It needs to be rectified immediately. I have a lot of shopping to do today."
"Mrs. Vanessa Vance?" Detective Ramirez's voice boomed through the quiet lobby.
Vanessa turned around, her smirk faltering slightly as she saw the badges. "Yes? What is the meaning of this? If my husband called you—"
"Vanessa Vance, you are under arrest for felony elder abuse, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, forgery, and aggravated assault," Ramirez stated clearly, pulling handcuffs from his belt.
The color completely drained from Vanessa’s face. She staggered back against the desk. "What?! This is ridiculous! It’s a domestic dispute! My husband is crazy, he's projecting—"
"We have one hundred and twelve days of high-definition video evidence, Mrs. Vance," I stepped forward from behind the detectives, looking her dead in the eye. "Every slap. Every withheld pill. Every conversation with Richard about forging my mother's signature. I saw it all."
"The... the cameras?" she whispered, her voice cracking as the realization hit her like a physical blow. "But I... I had them removed!"
"You removed the obvious ones," I said coldly. "I design surveillance networks for a living, Vanessa. Did you really think you could outsmart me in my own house?"
As the steel handcuffs clicked around her manicured wrists, she began to scream, losing all her upper-class decorum. "You trap! You set me up! Daniel, you can't do this to me! I'm your wife!"
"Not anymore," I said, handing her a folder. "Those are the divorce papers. Consider yourself served."
The lobby patrons stared and whispered as Vanessa was dragged out of the bank in handcuffs, weeping and cursing my name.
But we weren't done yet.
An hour later, a second police unit raided my cousin Richard’s apartment. He tried to escape through the fire escape, but the police were waiting. In his backpack, they found the forged property deeds and thirty thousand dollars in cash that Vanessa had managed to skim from my mother’s savings account before I froze it.
By noon, both Vanessa and Richard were locked in separate interrogation rooms at the central precinct. Because of the overwhelming nature of the video and physical evidence from Elena’s sewing box, the judge set a massive, unpayable bail of two million dollars each. Vanessa’s wealthy friends, upon hearing rumors of the horrific elder abuse charges, completely abandoned her. No one would touch her bail.
I went back to the hospital that afternoon, feeling a massive weight lifted off my shoulders. When I walked into my mother's room, she looked up, her eyes clearer than they had been in months. Elena was sitting by her side, peeling an apple for her.
"Is it done, son?" my mother asked, her voice trembling slightly.

I sat on the edge of her bed and hugged her tightly. "She's in jail, Mom. She and Richard. They are never coming back. This house, your life, everything is safe now."
My mother wept tears of relief, and across the bed, Elena smiled, a single tear escaping her bandaged eye. For the first time in eight months, we could all breathe.
