Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the Mask

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos.

Adrian’s guests—the high-society sharks who had been kissing his ring only moments ago—scrambled toward the exits like rats fleeing a burning ship. No one looked back at him. No one offered to help. Donald passed Adrian without a word, his face frozen in disgust, pausing only to apologize to Evelyn Vance for the inconvenience.

"Adrian!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching his arm so hard her manicured nails dug through his suit jacket. "What is she talking about?! What do you mean the house isn't yours?! My name is supposed to be on the deed next month! You promised me!"

"Shut up!" Adrian roared, flinging her arm off him. His eyes were bloodshot, his chest heaving as he stared at Evelyn. "Where is she? Where is Mara? She’s behind this, isn't she? That little bitch... she’s been hiding this whole time!"

He turned on his heel and lunged toward the grand marble staircase, his mind consumed by a blinding, feral rage. He didn't care about the marshals, he didn't care about the lawsuits—he wanted to find the woman who had quietly dismantled his entire life while lying in the bed upstairs.

He ran up the stairs three at a time, his breathing ragged, his fists clenched. He threw open the doors to the master suite with a violent crash.

"Mara!" he screamed, his voice cracking with fury. "Mara, you pathetic piece of—"

He stopped dead in his tracks.

The bedroom was no longer empty. Two trauma physicians in specialized medical jumpsuits were carefully lifting me from the bed onto an advanced, stabilization gurney. An IV line was already running into my arm, and a portable ultrasound monitor was humming softly beside the bed, showing the synchronized, rapid blinking of two tiny, fragile hearts.

Beside the gurney stood three massive, heavily armed private security operators from Vane Global, their hands resting on their tactical rifles.

I lay on the gurney, a clean blanket tucked around my shoulders. My face was pale, my temple bruised from where he had dragged me earlier, but my eyes were wide open. I looked directly at him.

Deadpan.

"Step back, sir," the lead security operator said, his voice a low, rumbling warning as he moved his body to block Adrian’s path. "You are approaching a protected asset of Vane Global. If you take another step, we will neutralize the threat."

"Protected asset?!" Adrian laughed hysterically, his hair disheveled, his status as a billionaire investor evaporated into thin air. "She’s my wife! Everything she owns belongs to me! Mara, call them off! Call off the lawyers! If you do this, I will ruin you! I will take the kids, I will make sure you never see them—"

"You won't take anything, Adrian," I whispered, my voice quiet but cutting through his manic screaming like a razor through silk. I slowly raised my right hand, the one holding my cracked phone. "Because while you were downstairs drinking champagne with your mistress, the medical team took swabs of the floorboards. They photographed the bruises on my shoulder blades. They recorded the internal trauma report from my specialist. The charges aren't just financial, Adrian. They’re criminal."

Adrian’s mouth fell open, his eyes darting to the marshals who had just entered the room behind him.

"You think you’re a genius because you can shout and kick a pregnant woman on the floor," I continued, my voice steady, my heart rate finally stabilizing as the medical gurney began to move toward the private elevator. "But you forgot the basic rule of leverage, Adrian. You never mistreat the person who holds your debt."

Vanessa ran into the room behind the marshals, her eyes wild as she saw the luxury furniture already being tagged with corporate liquidation barcodes by the Vane staff. "Adrian, do something! They’re taking my jewelry! They say the safes belong to the corporation!"

"It’s over, Vanessa," I said, looking at her as the gurney rolled past them. "You wanted his life? You can have it. You can have the debt, the lawsuits, and the prison sentence. Take it all. It suits you."

The marshals stepped forward, grabbing Adrian’s arms and pinning them behind his back. The cold click of steel handcuffs echoed through the master suite. As they dragged him down the hallway, his screams of rage echoed off the walls—the final, pathetic sounds of a man who had traded his soul for a kingdom made of paper.
