Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Vultures

Downstairs in the grand ballroom of the Greenwich estate, the air was thick with the scent of expensive cigars, rare scotch, and predatory ambition.
Adrian stood in the center of a semi-circle of older, wealthy men—the primary limited partners of Apex Venture Capital. Vanessa stood at his elbow, her fingers tracing the lapel of his tailored velvet tuxedo jacket, playing the part of the sophisticated hostess while the caterers circulated with silver trays of caviar and gold-leaf truffles.
"I’m telling you, Donald," Adrian boasted, raising his glass to a senior board member of a major pension fund. "Our new tech fund is going to oversubscribe by the end of the week. We’ve secured the proprietary rights to the next-generation logistics software. The margins are astronomical. If you don't increase your commitment tonight, Lexon Capital is going to buy out the remaining allocation."
Donald, a seasoned Wall Street veteran, smiled thinly. "It sounds impressive, Adrian. But rumors are floating around that your liquidity ratios are tight. There’s a rumor that a single institutional creditor holds over 60% of your short-term commercial paper. If they call that debt, Apex is dead in the water."
Adrian laughed loudly, waving his hand as if dismissing a pesky fly. "That paper is held by a passive offshore trust—Vane Global Solutions. It’s a legacy vehicle from my wife's family estate. It's completely dormant. Mara doesn't even know how to balance a checkbook, let alone manage an institutional portfolio. She's upstairs right now, resting her pretty little head. That debt is functionally permanent. It will never be called."
Vanessa chimed in, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Oh, absolutely. Mara doesn't have the stomach for business. She gets dizzy just looking at a spreadsheet. Adrian manages everything. You have absolutely nothing to worry about, Donald."
"Good," Donald nodded, clinking his glass against Adrian’s. "Because if that debt were ever accelerated, the covenants state that all our capital commitments are voided, and the firm’s assets immediately transfer to the lender. We'd have to walk away."
"It's a mathematical impossibility," Adrian said smoothly, his chest expanding with absolute confidence. "Tonight is about expansion. To the future of Apex!"
"To the future!" the crowd echoed, drinking deeply.
Suddenly, a subtle shift occurred in the room.
It started with a few muffled chimes. One by one, the smartphones of the venture capital boys began to vibrate in their pockets. A low murmur spread through the back of the crowd. Men in Italian loafers pulled out their devices, their faces instantly losing their relaxed, alcohol-flushed glow as they looked at their screens.
Adrian’s phone buzzed in his breast pocket. He ignored it at first, continuing to laugh at a joke Donald had made. But then Donald’s own tablet, which his assistant had just handed him, flashed with a bright red notification banner.
Donald’s smile instantly vanished. He stared at the screen, his eyes widening in complete disbelief.
"Adrian," Donald said, his voice dropping into an icy, dead tone. "What is this?"
"What's what?" Adrian frowned, finally pulling his phone out.
The lock screen was flooded with alerts from Bloomberg, Reuters, and the SEC Edgar filing system. A single headline was repeated across every single financial news outlet in the country:
APEX VENTURE CAPITAL FACES HOSTILE TAKEOVER; VANE GLOBAL ACCELERATES $400M IN CALLABLE DEBT; REPOSSESSION OF ALL CORPORATE AND PERSONAL COLLATERAL INITIATED STATUS: COMPLETED.
Adrian’s breath hitched. He tried to open his internal corporate portal, but the screen flashed with a giant, red lock icon: ACCESS DENIED. INVALID CREDENTIALS. ACCOUNT TERMINATED BY TRUSTEE.
"This... this is a glitch," Adrian stammered, a cold sweat instantly breaking out across his forehead. "A cyber-attack. Some script-kiddie trying to manipulate the market. Vanessa, call the IT department—"
Before Vanessa could even reach for her phone, the massive, frosted-glass double doors of the ballroom were violently pushed open.
The music didn't just stop; the power to the DJ booth was cut entirely, plunging the room into a jarring, ringing silence. A team of six men in dark, tactical security uniforms stepped into the room, led by a sharp, elegant woman in a pristine gray pantsuit. It was Evelyn Vance. Behind her stood two federal marshals, their golden badges gleaming under the crystal chandeliers.
"Adrian Montgomery," Evelyn’s voice rang out across the silent, terrified room. "I am the chief legal officer for Vane Global Solutions. As of nine minutes ago, your firm, your bank accounts, your intellectual property, and this very property have been legally repossessed due to a total default on your leveraged liquidity agreements."
"You can't do this!" Adrian screamed, stepping forward, his face twisting into an ugly, desperate mask. "This is my house! This is my company! Get the hell out of here before I have you arrested for trespassing!"
May you like
Evelyn didn't flinch. She pulled a certified court injunction from her leather folder and handed it directly to the federal marshal.
"Actually, Mr. Montgomery, you are the one trespassing," Evelyn said coldly. "This house was purchased using an Apex corporate subsidiary line of credit—a subsidiary that now belongs entirely to Vane Global. You have exactly ten minutes to gather your personal belongings and vacate the premises. If you resist, these marshals will escort you to a federal holding cell."
