Chapter 6 - The Sun Always Rises

Six months later.
The summer breeze blew through the open windows of our coastal home, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and salty ocean air.
Today was Sophie’s fourteenth birthday.
The backyard was decorated with fairy lights, paper lanterns, and colorful banners. Clara, Detective Mendez, Dr. Patel, and a few of Sophie’s new school friends were gathered around the outdoor dining table, laughing and sharing slices of homemade strawberry cake.
Sophie stood near the garden fence, wearing a light yellow summer dress. Her laughter—a sound that had been absent for so long—echoed through the yard like clear ringing bells.
I walked over to her, carrying a small wrapped box.
"Hey, birthday girl," I said gently, leaning against the wooden railing beside her.
"Hey, Mom," she smiled, her eyes bright and clear, devoid of the constant fear that used to shadow them.
"I have one last present for you," I said, handing her the box.
Sophie carefully untied the silver ribbon and opened the lid. Inside lay a simple velvet box containing a silver necklace with an engraved medallion.
She lifted the medallion and read the inscription aloud:
"Love isn't proven by blood. It is proven by presence. Forever your mother."
Tears welled in Sophie’s eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy. She threw her arms around my neck, hugging me tightly.
"I signed the final paperwork this morning," I whispered into her hair, holding her close. "The court permanently legally restored your name. You are officially Sophie Vance now. No one can ever take you away from me."
She pulled back slightly, looking into my eyes with a strength that amazed me every single day.
"I knew you were coming for me that night," Sophie said softly, her voice steady. "When I hid the phone in my boot, I wasn't just hiding evidence. I was leaving a map for you. Because I knew you were the only person in the world who was strong enough to fight him."
"I will always fight for you, Sophie," I said, kissing her forehead. "Always."

Down in the yard, Dr. Patel and Clara called out to us, raising their glasses in a toast.
Sophie grabbed my hand, her grip warm and strong, and together we walked back toward the light, leaving the darkness behind forever.
