Chapter 3 - The Nest of Wolves

The news broke at sunrise.
PROMINENT PHILANTHROPIST DANIEL MERCER ARRESTED FOR CHILD ABUSE AT ST. CATHERINE’S HOSPITAL.
By 9:00 AM, the hospital’s executive board room on the top floor was packed with nervous executives in expensive suits. The atmosphere was thick with tension and the smell of burnt espresso.
Arthur Sterling, the Chairman of the Board and a long-time golf partner of Daniel Mercer, slammed his leather-bound binder onto the conference table.
"Mara, this is a PR catastrophe!" Sterling shouted, his face reddening. "The Mercer family has contributed over $15 million to our pediatric research wing! Now our Chief Medical Officer has her ex-husband arrested in our own trauma bay in front of news cameras?"
I sat at the head of the table, perfectly composed, wearing a sharp navy blazer over my clinical scrubs.
"Arthur," I said smoothly, "what occurred in Trauma Bay 1 was not a 'PR catastrophe.' It was the arrest of a dangerous felon who brought a critically injured child into our facility and attempted to destroy evidence."
"He claims you orchestrated the entire scene to gain full custody!" another board member chimed in. "His legal team is already threatening a $50 million lawsuit against the hospital for defamation and unlawful detention!"
I leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the mahogany table.
"Let me be unequivocally clear," I said, my voice dropping an octave, cutting through the room like a scalpel. "The security footage from Bay 1 has been subpoenaed by the District Attorney. In that footage, Daniel Mercer explicitly admits to child abuse, threatens my life, and breaches hospital safety protocols. If this board attempts to suppress that evidence, minimize Daniel's actions, or retaliate against me, I will personally hold a press conference on the front steps of this institution within the hour."
Silence fell over the room.
"I will outline how St. Catherine’s prioritized donor money over the life of a thirteen-year-old girl," I continued, eyeing each board member individually. "And I will resign as Chief Medical Officer, taking every single top-tier surgeon on my team with me."
Arthur Sterling swallowed hard, his bluster completely deflating. "Mara... surely we can find a more... discreet way to handle this."

"There is no discretion when it comes to child safety," I replied, standing up. "You have a choice, gentlemen. You can stand with a child abuser and face complete legal and financial ruin, or you can release a public statement supporting the medical staff who saved that girl's life. You have thirty minutes to decide."
I picked up my folder and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the wolves to eat each other.
