Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Confrontation

The next morning, the news exploded. The headline “COLONEL’S DAUGHTER RESCUED FROM BURNING CABIN: MAFIA-STYLE FAMILY FRAUD EXPOSED” went viral on Facebook, gaining millions of shares within hours. The public sympathy shifted instantly. The monsters were finally being seen for what they were.
But the battle wasn't won yet. Because of Ryan's legal team, a emergency custody and bail hearing was scheduled for that very afternoon. Ryan and Linda had used their remaining illegal offshore funds to post a temporary bond, and they were arriving at the courthouse, flanked by high-priced lawyers, still arrogant.
I refused to stay in the hospital bed. Wrapped in a white coat, pale but resolute, I entered the courtroom in a wheelchair, holding my newborn daughter, Lily, wrapped tightly in my arms. She was premature, but she was a fighter. She was breathing on her own.
Ryan looked across the courtroom at me, a smug, venomous smirk on his face. He whispered something to his lawyer, confident that his mother’s political connections would save them.
The judge, a stern woman named Honorable Martha Vance, banged her gavel. "We are here to determine the emergency protective order and temporary custody of Lily Miller."
Ryan’s lawyer stood up. "Your Honor, my client is the biological father. The mother is clearly mentally unstable, dragged into a criminal investigation in Wisconsin while in labor. The child is at risk under the care of a family that uses military force to settle domestic disputes."
"Are you finished?" Judge Vance asked, her voice dry.
"Yes, Your Honor."
My father stood up. He wasn't wearing his dress uniform today. He was wearing his combat fatigues, looking every bit the warrior he was. He walked to the prosecutor's table and plugged a flash drive into the court's media system.
"Your Honor," Colonel Bennett said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "We do not need arguments. We have confessions."
The projector screen turned on. It wasn't the old tapes. It was a live video feed from the Chicago Police Department holding cells from an hour ago. Linda, believing she was speaking to a crooked lawyer on a secure line, was caught on a hidden wiretap.

"We just need to get custody of the brat," Linda's voice boomed through the courtroom. "Once we have the baby, Emily will sign over the Bennett estate trust. If Ryan has to rough her up one more time to make her sign, so be it. Just get us out of here!"
The courtroom erupted into gasps. Ryan’s smirk completely vanished. He turned a horrific shade of white. Linda, sitting in the front row of the gallery, let out a gasp and fainted onto the floor.
