Chapter 2 - The Secrets in the Shadows

Two weeks passed. I was safely ensconced in a private wing of a military hospital under 24-hour guard. The physical bruises on my arms and legs were fading into a sickly yellow, but the emotional scars ran deep. Every time a door closed loudly, I flinched.

My father rarely left my side. He had taken an emergency leave of absence. But while the hospital was a sanctuary, the legal battle outside was turning into a war zone.

"They're pleading not guilty," Leo reported one evening, slamming a cup of coffee onto the table. His face was dark with exhaustion. "Ryan’s defense attorney is making a massive push on Facebook and local news. They're spinning a narrative that Dad used his military position to illegally raid a civilian home and kidnap a pregnant woman."

I felt a cold dread wash over me. "Are people believing them?"

"Some are," Leo admitted reluctantly. "Linda has a lot of connections in the Chicago elite. They’re painting you as a woman suffering from severe postpartum psychosis before the baby is even born. They’re claiming the bruises were self-inflicted."

I looked down at my stomach. My baby kicked, a sharp, fierce movement as if telling me to fight back. "They're trying to take my baby away from me, aren't they?"

"They're going to try to claim custody the moment she's born," my father’s voice cut through the room. He had walked in, his expression grim. "Ryan filed a petition this morning claiming you are an unfit mother."

The audacity of it took my breath away. He had beaten me, starved me, and now he wanted to steal my child to continue his torment.

Suddenly, the phone on the nightstand buzzed. It was an unknown number. I shouldn't have answered it, but a strange instinct forced my hand. I pressed it to my ear.

"Hello, Emily," a woman's voice whispered. It wasn't Linda. It sounded younger, terrified.

"Who is this?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"My name is Sarah," the voice said, trembling. "I was Ryan's fiancé before he met you. They told everyone I moved away... but the truth is, I escaped. I saw the news. I saw what they're doing to you. Emily, you need to look into the basement of Ryan's old family cabin in Wisconsin. That's where they keep the real secrets. Hurry, before Linda's lawyers burn it down."

The line went dead.
