The Truth Was Only the Beginning of Their Punishment

Daniel's lips parted, but no words came.

The footage continued playing for another few seconds before Arthur pressed the stop button. The screen went dark, leaving the silence even heavier than before.

Evelyn stared at her son as though she had never seen him.

"Daniel..." she whispered.

He lowered his head.

"I... I took the jewelry."

Lily looked from her brother to Grace, confusion replacing fear.

"You said Miss Grace was bad," she murmured.

No one answered her.

Daniel dragged a shaky hand across his face.

"I lost a fortune on investments. I kept telling myself I'd recover it before anyone noticed." He let out a hollow laugh. "Then the debts got worse. I panicked."

He glanced toward Grace, unable to hold her gaze.

"I pawned the jewelry. I planned to buy everything back before Mom opened the box."

Grace remained silent.

"I never thought..." Daniel swallowed hard. "I never thought she'd accuse you."

Arthur's expression didn't change.

"You watched her take the blame," he said quietly.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I know."

Evelyn's shoulders trembled. She looked at Grace, then at her own hand—the same hand that had struck a woman who had spent ten years caring for her family.

Slowly, she crossed the room.

"I'm so sorry."

The words barely escaped her lips.

Grace looked at the woman she had once trusted completely.

"The bruise on my face will fade," she said softly. "But trust doesn't heal that quickly."

Tears rolled down Evelyn's cheeks.

She reached for Grace's hand, then stopped halfway, realizing she had no right to expect forgiveness.

Before anyone could speak again, Lily broke free and wrapped both arms around Grace.

"I knew you didn't do it," the little girl whispered through her tears.

Grace held her close, finally allowing her own tears to fall.

For the first time that evening, everyone understood what had truly been lost.

It had never been the jewelry.

It was the trust they had shattered in a matter of minutes.
