The Baby Monitor That Refused to Stay Silent

Grace stopped only a few feet from the front door.
She didn't reach for the handle.
Behind her, the room remained painfully quiet except for Lily's muffled sobs. The little girl stretched both arms toward Grace again, but Evelyn held her gently, determined not to let her follow.
Daniel avoided everyone's eyes. He rubbed his wrist without thinking, then quickly pulled his sweater sleeve over the pale mark Arthur had noticed moments earlier.
Arthur watched the movement carefully.
His attention drifted once more to the baby monitor resting on the cabinet. The tiny green light continued blinking as steadily as it had all evening.
A memory surfaced.
Earlier, while bringing Lily upstairs, he had noticed the monitor recording even though no one had bothered to switch it off afterward.
His hand slipped inside his jacket pocket.
The small remote was exactly where he had left it.
He hesitated.
If he was wrong, Grace would walk out the door forever carrying a crime she had never committed. If he was right, the Harper family would never be the same again.
Grace took another slow step.
Arthur could wait no longer.
He quietly removed the remote and pressed a single button.
A soft electronic beep filled the room.
Everyone turned.
The monitor's screen flickered to life.
Grainy footage appeared.
The living room sat empty for several seconds before a familiar figure entered the frame.
The man walked calmly toward the marble coffee table.
He opened the jewelry box.
One by one, he removed the expensive pieces and slipped them into his pocket.
Then he closed the lid halfway and walked away without looking back.
No one breathed.
Daniel slowly turned toward the glowing screen.
His face drained of color.
Arthur lowered the remote and met his eyes for the first time.
"I saw everything."

The room remained silent.
This time, no one looked at Grace.
