Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Office

By Monday morning, the glass towers of downtown Baltimore were shrouded in a thick rain. Arthur stood outside the glass doors of Vanguard Dynamics, his hair disheveled, his suit wrinkled. He had spent the entire weekend trying to contact his lenders, only to be met by automated rejections.
The security guards—men he had hired himself—stood inside the lobby, their arms crossed, refusing to let him pass the turnstiles.
"Let me in, you idiot!" Arthur screamed, slamming his fist against the bulletproof glass. "I am the CEO of this company! You can't lock me out of my own building!"
"You were the CEO, Arthur."
The cool, clear voice cut through the rainy hum of the street. Arthur spun around.
A sleek black Mercedes Maybach pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and a personal security guard stepped out, holding a massive black umbrella. From the back seat stepped Emma.
She wore a tailored black wool coat, her hair pinned up elegantly, completely revealing the left side of her face. The burn had faded to a light pink mark, covered beautifully by professional makeup, but the scar served as a reminder of what she had survived. Behind her walked Marcus Vance and a team of four forensic accountants.
Arthur stared at her, his jaw dropping. "Emma? What are you doing here? Why are you with the Lawson Capital legal team?"
"Because I am Lawson Capital, Arthur," Emma said, walking past him as the security guards immediately bowed their heads and opened the glass doors for her.
Arthur scrambled behind her, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps as he followed her into the grand executive boardroom on the top floor. Brooke was already there, having been brought in by the corporate compliance team, weeping over her ruined credit scores.
"Emma, please!" Brooke cried, reaching out her hands. "Tell these people there’s been a mistake! Arthur told me the money he gave my boutique was part of his executive bonus! I didn't know anything about the loans!"
Emma sat at the head of the massive mahogany table—the very seat Arthur had occupied for years while looking down on his staff. She placed her hands flat on the wood.
"There is no mistake, Brooke," Emma said coldly. "Every single dollar Arthur gave you was stolen from my grandfather’s legacy accounts. You bought diamonds with my family’s sweat. You bought sports cars with the money my mother left me."
Arthur stepped forward, his eyes wild with a mixture of rage and terror. "You trapped me! You played the quiet, submissive house-wife for eight years just to pull the rug out from under me? You’re a monster, Emma!"

"I didn't trap you, Arthur," Emma replied, her voice steady and implacable. "You trapped yourself the moment you thought silence meant stupidity. You thought because I didn't scream when you insulted me, I wasn't writing everything down. I gave you eight years to be a good man. You chose to be a thief. And on Saturday morning, you chose to be a criminal."
Marcus Vance slid a thick document across the table. "Arthur, this is the official documentation for your criminal indictment. Embezzlement, corporate fraud, tax evasion, and domestic assault. The police are waiting downstairs."
