Chapter 3 - The First Domino Falls

The penthouse suite at the Four Seasons was bathed in the cool light of a Saturday afternoon. Emma sat at the glass desk, a linen compress pressed against her burned cheek, while her corporate attorney, Marcus Vance, laid out three thick blue folders.
"It’s done, Emma," Marcus said, his eyes filled with a mixture of professional respect and deep sympathy. "The moment you left the house, we executed the acceleration clauses on Vanguard Dynamics’ loans. Because Arthur missed the quarterly disclosure filing yesterday afternoon—which he neglected because he was too busy purchasing a luxury yacht for Brooke’s birthday—he is technically in default."
Emma looked out the window at the Baltimore skyline. "And the house?"
"The estate in Potomac was purchased through a trust funded by your grandfather. Arthur believes he’s a co-owner because his name is on the residential permit, but the deed belongs entirely to Lawson Capital’s real estate subsidiary. We’ve already filed the eviction notice. He has forty-eight hours to vacate the premises."
Emma took a slow sip of her tea. "What about the shell company? Apex Management?"
Marcus smiled—a sharp, predatory expression. "That’s the best part. Arthur thought he was clever by hiding the stolen funds in Brooke's boutique accounts. But because Apex Management used Vanguard Dynamics’ corporate servers to log their banking details, those accounts were flagged under the loan collateral. We froze Brooke’s entire retail inventory two hours ago. Every dress, every shoe, and every dollar in her merchant account belongs to you now."
Meanwhile, back at the Potomac mansion, Arthur was furious. He had been trying to call Emma for four hours, his calls going straight to voicemail.
"The bitch actually thinks she can survive without me," Arthur muttered, pacing the living room floor while Brooke sat on the velvet sofa, frantic.
"Arthur, my business cards aren't working!" Brooke cried, staring at her phone. "The bank says my corporate checking account has been closed due to an 'internal forensic audit.' What is going on? I have a shipment of Italian leather arriving at the port in two hours!"
Before Arthur could answer, his phone rang. It was the vice president of his board at Vanguard Dynamics.

"Arthur! You need to get to the office right now!" the man shouted, his voice cracking with panic. "The federal marshals just walked into the building! They’re locking the servers! They say our primary lender, Lawson Capital, has initiated a hostile asset seizure! We’re bankrupt, Arthur! The whole firm is gone!"
Arthur’s phone slipped from his hand, bouncing off the polished hardwood floor. The walls of his golden empire were suddenly turning into smoke.
