Chapter 4 - The Secrets of the Safe

With Derek and Marlene behind bars awaiting trial, I returned to my father’s house for the first time since the night I escaped through the laundry room window.

The estate felt vast and quiet, but no longer suffocating. Police tape still marked the master bedroom, but the rest of the house was mine again. Accompanied by Elena and a team of private forensic investigators, I walked through the high-ceilinged rooms, reclaiming my life step by step.

Our target was the hidden wall safe behind the library bookcase—a safe my father had built forty years ago when he started his business. Derek had found the main safe in the office, but he had never known about this one.

I reached behind the oak paneling, pressed the hidden mechanism, and keyed in the date of my mother's birthday. The heavy steel door clicked and swung open smoothly.

Inside lay three black leather journals, a series of land deeds, and an encrypted hard drive labeled VANE ARCHIVE - DO NOT DESTROY.

"What is that?" Elena asked, leaning over my shoulder as I pulled the drive out.

"My father was a cautious man," I said, my voice filled with nostalgia as I ran my fingers over my dad's handwriting on the label. "He never trusted Derek. From the moment Derek proposed to me, Dad had a private investigator look into his background. Dad died before he could show me what he found... or maybe he hesitated because he didn't want to break my heart while I was happy."

We took the hard drive to the library desk, plugged it into my laptop, and entered the decryption key written inside one of the journals.

Files popped up across the screen, dating back eight years.

As we scrolled through the documents, my jaw dropped in shock. What we found went far deeper than simple corporate fraud.

Derek hadn't met me by accident at that charity gala six years ago. The entire encounter had been orchestrated by Marlene and a corrupt financial broker named Gregory Vance (no relation to the judge), who had been banned from Wall Street for racketeering.

Before Derek met me, his family was buried under millions of dollars in gambling debts and illegal loans from organized crime syndicates in Chicago. Marlene had targeted my father's enterprise as their way out. Derek was instructed to marry me, gain control of the family trust, and systematically siphon money to pay off their debts to dangerous loan sharks.

Even worse, we found a series of medical records from the hospice facility where my father spent his final months.

Attached to the medical file was a private toxicology report my father had ordered quietly three weeks before his death. The report showed elevated levels of heavy metal toxins—specifically thallium—in his blood work.

My hands began to shake violently. "Elena... look at this."

Elena read the medical summary, her eyes widening in horror. "Thallium? That’s... that’s poison. It’s odorless, tasteless, and mimics progressive neurological failure."

"Dad didn't die of natural organ failure," I whispered, tears spilling down my cheeks as the awful truth crashed down on me. "They were poisoning him. Marlene was making his meals every evening while he was in home care... She was killing him slowly so Derek could take over the company."

Elena stood up, her face white. "Sarah, this changes everything. This isn't just assault and wire fraud anymore. This is premeditated murder."

"We need to prove it," I said, wiping my tears with a fierce resolve. "Dad’s body was cremated, but the toxicology reports signed by his private doctor before he died are here. And look at this ledger..."

I opened the third journal. It contained a list of recurring cash payments made by Marlene to a local pharmacy worker named Donald Vance. Every month for two years, thousands of dollars in cash were transferred in exchange for unregistered chemical compounds.

"We have the buyer, the money, and the victim's medical records," Elena said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "I'm calling District Attorney Vance right now. They’re going to upgrade the charges to First-Degree Murder."

That evening, state police raided a small apartment on the west side of town, arresting Donald Vance. Under intense interrogation, Vance cracked within two hours, confessing that Marlene Vane had paid him over $80,000 to supply her with illegal chemical toxins under the table.

The net was closing in, tight and inescapable.
