Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Vane

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the grand foyer, blue and red lights flashed against the manicured lawns. Four state police cruisers and two unmarked black SUVs pulled up to the front entrance, blocking Derek’s sports cars in the driveway.

Marlene gasped, clutching her silk robe tight around her chest. "They... they can't be here for us! Call your uncle! Call him right now!"

Derek’s fingers were trembling so violently he could barely unlock his smartphone. When he finally brought the phone to his ear, his uncle’s voice didn't answer with his usual warm, corrupt familiarity. Instead, an automated message played: The number you have dialed is currently unavailable or under investigation.

The heavy front doors burst open. Lead Detective Miller, accompanied by six uniformed officers and two federal agents from the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division, stepped into the marble entryway.

"Derek Vane? Marlene Vane?" Detective Miller called out, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Derek stumbled out of the office, his expensive tie crooked, sweat shining on his forehead. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am? I am the acting CEO of Vane Construction! You are trespassing on private property!"

Detective Miller didn't flinch. He pulled a rolled-up document from his inner jacket pocket and unrolled it with a sharp flick of his wrist.

"Derek Vane, I have an arrest warrant for felony domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful imprisonment," Miller announced calmly. "Furthermore, Federal Agent Ross here has a warrant for your arrest on counts of grand larceny, bank fraud, and federal wire fraud."

"This is a mistake!" Marlene shrieked, marching down the stairs with her finger pointed at the detective. "My daughter-in-law is a lunatic! She’s mentally unstable, she self-harms, she made all of this up to get back at my son because he wanted a divorce!"

Agent Ross stepped forward, holding up a ruggedized tablet. On the screen was the crystal-clear 4K footage from the smoke detector—showing Derek dragging me across the floor, his fist striking my face, and Marlene standing in the doorway laughing while sipping her tea.

"We have the video feed, Mrs. Vane," Agent Ross said coldly. "Audio and video, fully timestamped and encrypted at 3:07 a.m. this morning. We also have the digital audit trail showing your son just attempted to illegally transfer fifty million dollars using a stolen corporate master key three minutes ago."

Marlene’s breath caught in her throat. Her face turned as gray as ashes. She looked at Derek, whose eyes were wide with blind panic.

"She... she trapped us," Derek stammered, backing away toward the rear exit. "She set this whole thing up..."

"Turn around and place your hands behind your back, Mr. Vane," Detective Miller ordered, pulling steel handcuffs from his belt.

"No! Get away from me!" Derek screamed, losing his composure completely. He turned and tried to sprint down the hallway toward the patio doors, but two uniformed officers tackled him to the floor. The heavy sound of his face slamming into the hardwood mirrored the exact sound my face had made hours earlier.

"Get off him! You can't treat my son like this!" Marlene screamed, lunging toward the officers. Agent Ross grabbed her arm, swinging her around and snapping a pair of handcuffs onto her wrists as well.

"Marlene Vane, you are being detained as an accessory to domestic violence, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and grand theft," Ross informed her sternly.

As Derek was hoisted off the floor, blood trickled from a fresh cut on his chin—a bitter mirror image of my own injuries. His pristine suit was ruined, torn at the shoulder, covered in dust from the floor he had neglected to keep clean.

"Where is she?!" Derek roared, spitting blood onto the floor as officers dragged him toward the front door. "Where is that bitch?! Tell her I’ll kill her! I’ll tear her apart!"

"I wouldn't recommend making death threats in front of federal agents, Mr. Vane," Agent Ross said coldly, opening the rear door of the police cruiser and shoving Derek inside.

From across the street, sitting in the passenger seat of Elena Ruiz’s black sedan, I watched through tinted glass as my husband and his mother were loaded into separate police vehicles. My bruised face was partially covered by a dark scarf, but for the first time in two years, I stood tall.

"How does it feel?" Elena asked softly, turning off her engine.

I took a deep breath, feeling the cold morning air fill my lungs without the crushing weight of fear holding me down.

"It’s a good start," I replied. "But they still think they can buy their way out of this with their hidden offshore money. We need to make sure they don't have a single penny left to pay for their defense."

Elena smiled, pulling out a thick manila folder labeled Project Blueprint. "Don't worry. The financial freeze went into effect thirty seconds after Derek entered that code. Every single account linked to Marlene, Derek, and their shell company in Panama is locked tight. They can't even afford a public defender right now."

"Good," I said, looking back at the house that had once belonged to my father. "Now let's go take my company back."

An hour later, I walked into the headquarters of Vane Construction. The broad glass building was buzzing with rumors. Employees stood near the water fountains whispering, while board members milled about in the lobby, panicked about the sudden disappearance of Derek and the cancellation of the Crestline meeting.

When I stepped through the front glass doors, accompanied by Elena and two court-appointed corporate receivers, the room fell silent.

For months, the staff had seen me as a frail, grieving widow who occasionally visited to sit silently in her late father’s office. Today, despite the dark bruise along my jaw and the bandage over my lip, I wore my father’s classic wool coat and held a stack of legal documents under my arm.

"Good morning, everyone," I announced, my voice carrying clearly across the marble lobby. "Effective immediately, Derek Vane has been removed as acting CEO by order of the State Superior Court. As the sole heir and majority shareholder of Vane Construction, I am resuming my position as Chairwoman of the Board."

The board members stared in disbelief. Mr. Henderson, an older executive who had been loyal to my father for twenty years before Derek sidelined him, stepped forward with eyes wide open.

"Sarah?" Henderson asked softly. "Is... is it true? What happened to your face?"

"Derek happened," I answered plainly, holding his gaze. "He and his mother spent the last two years embezzling from this company and abusing me in my own home. But as of 8:15 this morning, both of them are behind bars."

A collective gasp echoed through the lobby.

"Mr. Henderson," I continued, handing him a binder of forensic accounting reports. "I need you to convene an emergency board meeting in fifteen minutes. We are going to restore every contract Derek tampered with, fire every manager he hired to cover his tracks, and report his crimes to the SEC."

Henderson looked down at the binder, scanning the clear, undeniable proof of Derek's betrayal. Tears filled the old man's eyes before he looked up at me with profound respect.

"Welcome back, Sarah," he said firmly. "Your father would be so proud."
