Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

"Get your hands off me!" Odessa screamed, struggling against Lauren and Paige's grip. She kicked out, her shoe connecting with Paige’s shin, eliciting a sharp cry of pain, but Lauren threw her weight forward, pinning Odessa's shoulders against the metal racks.

Sarah’s fingers ripped through Odessa’s apron pockets, throwing out the silver service card, a pack of mints, and a lint roller. She tore at the fabric of the uniform, her eyes manic with the scent of a corporate reward.

"Where is it?" Sarah growled, her lipstick smearing as she grimaced. "The assistant said he would try to pass a physical drive or a ledger! If I find it, the GM promised me the executive floor manager position!"

"I don't have anything!" Odessa lied, her voice raw. Her mind was racing. The drive wasn't in her standard pockets; it was tucked into the custom, interior zipper she had sewn into the lining of her uniform to keep her emergency rent cash safe from petty thieves in the staff locker room.

Sarah ripped open Odessa's collar, tearing the top button away. She reached into the bodice of the uniform, her hand brushing against the thick, reinforced seam where the drive lay hidden. Odessa froze, holding her breath, praying the fabric was thick enough to mask the shape of the metal.

"Nothing," Sarah muttered, pulling her hand away, breathless and frustrated. She slammed her hand against the shelving unit next to Odessa's head. "Where did you hide it? Did you leave it in the room? Did you drop it down the laundry chute?"

"I don't know what you're talking about," Odessa gasped, her eyes burning with angry tears. "You just assaulted me, Sarah. That’s a felony. I’ll go straight to the police."

Sarah laughed, a high-pitched, ugly sound that echoed in the tight space of the closet. "The police? Who are they going to believe? Three senior housekeepers who caught a thief stealing luxury amenities from a guest room, or a South Side nobody whose mother died a charity case? Look around you, Callaway. You have no marks on you. We found 'stolen property' in your locker this morning—Lauren already put three bottles of expensive champagne in there. You're done here."

Odessa’s stomach plummeted. They had completely insulated themselves. If she screamed, if she fought, she would be arrested for theft before she ever reached the lobby.

"Check her socks," Paige whispered, rubbing her bruised shin. "People always hide things in their shoes."

Before Sarah could bend down, the overhead intercom in the linen closet buzzed to life with a sharp, static hiss. The voice of the general manager, Mr. Henderson, boomed through the small speaker, sounding uncharacteristically panicked.

"Sarah Merritt, report to the penthouse suite immediately with housekeepers Calloway, Vance, and Paige. Repeat, report to the penthouse immediately. Do not delay."

The three women froze. Sarah slowly lowered her hands, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Why would Henderson want all of us up there?"

"Maybe Mr. Kane realized his precious maid 'stole' something after all," Lauren sneered, releasing her grip on Odessa's shoulder.

Odessa smoothed down her torn uniform, her fingers pressing against the hidden zipper. The drive was still there. She took a deep, trembling breath, forcing the terror down into a dark corner of her mind. "We shouldn't keep the general manager waiting, Sarah. You know how he hates delays."

The ride up the guest elevator was suffocating. Sarah stood at the front, her back rigid, while Lauren and Paige guarded Odessa like jailors. When the doors opened on the thirty-second floor, the atmosphere was entirely different from the quiet luxury of the morning.

Two men in dark, expensive suits stood outside the penthouse door, their earpieces glowing with blue indicator lights. These weren't hotel security. These were corporate fixers.

Inside the suite, Mr. Henderson, a round man who usually exuded an aura of oily hospitality, was sweating profusely, wiping his bald head with a silk handkerchief. Standing near the fireplace was a woman who looked like she had been sculpted out of ice. Victoria Kane, Theo's stepmother, wore a cream-colored Chanel suit, her diamond necklace catching the pale light of the room. Beside her stood Julian, Theo's half-brother, a slick twenty-something with a cruel smirk and a gold watch that cost more than Odessa's lifetime earnings.

Theo sat in his usual chair by the window, completely detached from the chaos, his face an impenetrable mask of stone.

"Ah, Sarah," Mr. Henderson gasped as the women entered. "Thank god. We have a... a situation of extreme corporate delicacy. Mrs. Kane claims that an item of highly sensitive nature has been removed from the suite, and she believes one of our staff is involved."

Sarah stepped forward, her face morphing into a look of perfect, submissive obedience. "Mr. Henderson, Mrs. Kane... I am so sorry. We actually just caught this girl, Odessa Callaway, acting suspiciously in the linen closet. We believe she’s been taking advantage of Mr. Kane’s condition to steal from him."

Julian chuckled, stepping forward and looking at Odessa as if she were an insect. "Well, well. It looks like the blind man’s little pet is just a common thief. Hand over the drive, girl, and maybe my mother won't press charges that carry a ten-year sentence."

Odessa stood her ground, her gaze sliding past Julian to fix entirely on Theo. "I don't have any drive, sir. I was doing my job."

"She’s lying!" Sarah shrieked. "Search her properly, Mrs. Kane! She’s hiding it!"

"Enough," Theo’s voice barked through the room like a gunshot.

The entire suite went completely silent. Mr. Henderson swallowed hard, his adam's apple bobbing. Victoria Kane narrowed her eyes, her gaze drifting toward her stepson with a cold, aristocratic disdain.

"Theo, dear," Victoria said, her voice smooth as silk but dripping with venom. "Don't protect the help. We know you built an unencrypted file cache. We know you intended to send it to Marcus Stern before the board meeting tomorrow. This girl was your only contact today. Let us handle this so we can get you the... medical attention you so desperately need."

Theo slowly stood up, turning his sightless eyes directly toward his stepmother. "You always underestimated my father, Victoria. And you certainly underestimate me. I didn't give Odessa a drive."

Julian laughed out loud. "Oh, really? Then why did you write a specific request for her to be your exclusive maid, bro? You've been a recluse for three weeks, and suddenly you're making friends with the cleaning staff?"

"I requested her," Theo said, a fierce, brilliant smile breaking across his face, "because she is the only person in this entire establishment who knows how to operate the localized security feeds my father installed during the 2022 renovation."

Victoria's smile froze. "What are you talking about?"

"This hotel was built by Kane Hospitality, Victoria," Theo said, stepping toward the center of the room. "My father didn't trust the hotel management, and he certainly didn't trust you. He hardwired a secondary, closed-circuit audio and video recording system into the crown molding of this penthouse, routed directly to an independent server room in the basement. A system that records everything—including the conversation you had with Mr. Henderson twenty minutes ago about offering him a corporate vice-presidency if he helped manufacture a theft charge against me."

Mr. Henderson turned a terrifying shade of green. "Mr. Kane... Theo... that... that was just a misunderstanding—"

"And as for you, Sarah," Theo continued, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "The microphones in the linen closets are exceptionally sensitive. The federal laws regarding conspiracy to commit extortion and corporate espionage are quite clear. And the recording of you planning to plant champagne in Odessa's locker has already been uploaded to the cloud."

Sarah’s knees buckled. She reached out, grabbing the edge of the sofa to keep from collapsing onto the floor. Lauren and Paige instantly backed away from her, their faces pale with terror.

"You're bluffing," Julian hissed, though his voice shook. "You can't see the server logs. You don't have the network access!"

"I don't," Theo said, turning his head toward Odessa. "But Odessa does. Odessa, tell my brother what is currently happening on the tablet inside your service caddy."

Odessa didn't hesitate. She stepped out of the room, grabbed the industrial tablet she used to log her room completions from her cart, and brought it into the suite. The screen was flashing with a progress bar that had just hit 100%.

"The files have been transferred, Mr. Kane," Odessa said, her voice filled with a crystalline, triumphant clarity. "The entire audio log of this room, along with the resort development audit data, has just been delivered to the compliance director, Marcus Stern, and the Chicago District Attorney's office."

Victoria Kane stood frozen, the ice in her demeanor finally shattering into a look of pure, unadulterated horror. The empire she had spent six months trying to steal had just collapsed into a pile of federal indictments in a matter of seconds.
