Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Dark

The South Side apartment was cold when Odessa unlocked the door at seven o'clock that evening. The radiator in the corner was clanking rhythmically, releasing a pathetic hiss of steam that did nothing to fight the December chill creeping through the window panes.

"Nova?" Odessa called out, tossing her worn canvas bag onto the small kitchen table.

A head of unruly dark curls popped out from behind the bedroom door. Nova, nineteen, wore an oversized grey hoodie and mismatched socks, her eyes rimmed with red from hours of staring at textbooks. "Hey, Des. I thought you had to work the late linen shift."

"I got taken off it," Odessa said, a small, genuine smile breaking across her face for the first time all day. She walked over to the fridge, pulling out a carton of eggs and some leftover bread. "In fact, our financial situation might be looking up a little."

Nova bounced into the kitchen, her eyes lighting up. "Did Sarah finally give you the floor supervisor bonus?"

"No. Better. I got assigned exclusively to the penthouse suite. The guest requested me." Odessa cracked an egg into the pan, the sizzle filling the quiet kitchen. "It means steady hours, higher tips, and Sarah can't touch my morning schedule without throwing a tantrum that corporate will hear."

Nova’s excitement suddenly faltered. She slid into a chair at the table, her expression turning cautious. "Wait. The penthouse? Is that... is that Theo Kane's room?"

Odessa paused, the spatula hovering over the pan. "How do you know his name?"

Nova pulled her phone out of her pocket, tapping the screen before sliding it across the table toward her sister. "Des, he’s all over the business blogs right now. It’s not just hotel gossip. Look at this."

Odessa leaned over the pan, scanning the headlines on Nova’s phone.

"They're trying to take his company away from him," Nova whispered, leaning forward. "My friend Marcus who works in corporate banking says the rumors are brutal. Ever since his father died six months ago, Theo’s stepmother, Victoria, and his half-brother, Julian, have been leaked stories to the press saying Theo’s mental health is deteriorating because of his blindness. They’re trying to trigger a clause in the family trust that declares him legally incompetent to manage the empire."

Odessa felt a sudden, cold weight drop into her stomach. She remembered the absolute stillness of the man in the charcoal sweater, the sharp precision with which he had deduced the presence of the women outside his door. He wasn't crazy. He wasn't losing his mind. He was a man under siege, hiding out in a luxury hotel penthouse while his own bloodline prepared to bury him alive.

"They say he hasn't left the hotel room in three weeks," Nova continued, her eyes wide. "They’re trying to make him look like a reclusive madman so the board votes to strip his voting rights on Friday."

"He's not a madman," Odessa said fiercely, surprising even herself with the intensity of her defense. "He’s sharp. Safer than anyone else in that building, Nova."

"Just be careful, Des," Nova said, reaching out to squeeze her sister’s hand. "People with that kind of money don't fight fair. If his family is trying to destroy him, anyone standing too close to him could get crushed in the collapse."

The next morning, Odessa arrived at the Whitcomb Grand at 7:30 AM. The atmosphere in the locker room was thick with tension. When she walked in, the usual morning chatter died instantly. Lauren and Paige refused to make eye contact, rushing out with their clipboards as if Odessa carried a contagious disease.

Sarah Merritt sat at the main desk, her red lips wrapped around a cigarette she wasn't supposed to be smoking indoors. She didn't say a word as Odessa clocked in, but the look she gave her was pure poison. It was the look of a predator waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

At exactly 8:00 AM, Odessa stood outside the penthouse door. This time, there was no laughter down the hall. No clicking rings. Only the heavy, silent weight of the thirty-second floor.

She swiped her card, the lock clicking open. "Good morning, Mr. Kane. It's Odessa."

Theo was sitting in the exact same spot by the window, but the charcoal sweater had been replaced by a tailored black suit that made him look imposing, almost lethal. His jaw was cleanly shaven, and a leather-bound folder lay open on his lap, his fingers tracing a series of raised braille dots on the pages.

"You're thirty seconds early, Odessa," he said without turning around.

"I wanted to make sure your breakfast arrived hot, sir," she said, wheeling the silver room-service cart into the dining alcove.

"Leave the breakfast," he said, closing the folder with a sharp snap. "Come here."

Odessa hesitated, then walked over to the window, stopping exactly three feet away from his chair. "Yes, Mr. Kane?"

"My family thinks I am blind to their machinations," Theo said, his voice low, vibrating with a quiet, dangerous energy. "They think because my eyes don't work, my ears don't hear the knives being sharpened in the dark. Tell me, Odessa... what is the hotel staff saying about me today?"

Odessa gripped the fabric of her apron. She could lie. She could protect herself from the corporate crossfire. But she looked at his strong, stoic profile, saw the invisible weight of the world resting on his shoulders, and she knew she couldn't do it.

"They're saying your stepmother and brother are holding a board meeting on Friday," she said honestly. "They're saying they want to use a capacity clause to prove you're unfit to run the company because you won't leave this room."

Theo’s lips curved into a dark, humorless smile. "And what do you think, Odessa? Do you think I'm unfit?"

"I think you're the smartest man in this building," she said directly. "And I think you're staying in this room because it’s the only place they haven't figured out how to bug yet."

Theo turned his head fully toward her, his sightless eyes locked onto hers with such intensity that for a terrifying second, she wondered if he could actually see her.

"You are a very dangerous woman, Odessa Callaway," he whispered. "Because you see far too much."
