Chapter 5 - The Shattered Empire

Black-clad figures rappelled down from the shattered ceiling, flashbangs exploding with deafening roars that blinded the room in white-hot light. The concussive blasts threw me to the floor, my ears ringing violently.
These weren't my father's guards. And they weren't the local police.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!" a voice bellowed through a megaphone.
Within seconds, Arthur’s private security team was neutralized, thrown to the ground and disarmed with lethal efficiency. Mark screamed as he was slammed onto the desk, his face pressed against the ruined, smoking laptop. My mother shrieked in terror as an agent forced her to her knees.
A tall woman in an FBI tactical vest walked over to me, offering a hand to help me up. It was Special Agent Sarah Vance-Miller—Ethan’s estranged cousin who worked for the federal organized crime division.
"Are you alright, Clara?" Sarah asked, her eyes sharp and protective.
"I'm fine," I breathed, coughing from the smoke. "The data... did it work?"
Sarah looked over at the burning server rack, then smiled grimly. "The wipe command successfully erased their localized copies, but the 'Scorched Earth' protocol didn't just destroy the data here. It automatically rerouted the entire unencrypted database directly to the Department of Justice's main mainframe in Washington D.C. We have everything. The buyers, the politicians on the payroll, the synthetic narcotics shipments—every single piece of evidence we need to dismantle this entire global network."
Arthur stood in the center of the room, leaning heavily on his cane, his hands trembling violently. The illusion of the all-powerful patriarch had vanished, leaving behind a frail, terrified old man facing the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary.
"This is a mistake," Arthur rasped, trying to maintain his dignity as an agent pulled his hands behind his back. "I have connections. I am Arthur Vance!"
"Not anymore, Arthur," Agent Miller said, stepping directly into his line of sight. "Your 'connections' are currently being arrested in simultaneous raids across four different time zones. The syndicate you served is gone. And as for the judge who signed that emergency custody order? He was picked up by federal agents twenty minutes ago on bribery charges."
Mark looked up from the desk, his face covered in sweat and tears. "Clara, please! We're family! We did it for the legacy! You can't let them do this to us!"
I walked over to my brother, looking down at him with a mixture of pity and disgust. "Family doesn't assault a grieving mother. Family doesn't steal a newborn child from his mother's arms. You chose your legacy, Mark. Now you can live with it in a cell."
As my family was dragged out of the mansion in handcuffs, their legacy burning to ashes around them, Marcus walked over, rubbing his bruised wrists.
"It's over, Clara," Marcus said quietly. "Truly over. The syndicate has no power left to threaten you or the kids. Ethan’s name is cleared, and his final plan worked flawlessly."

I looked up through the shattered skylight at the stormy night sky. The clouds were beginning to break, revealing a brilliant blanket of stars. For the first time since the crash, I felt a sense of peace.
"Let's go home, Marcus," I said. "My children are waiting."
